systemic fertilizer

Vero Beach, FL

has anyone used a systemic on plumeria .I had leaf hoppers on most of mine this summer, they came in on a plant i bought from a nursery here.I know a systemic will work on brugs, but i havn't used it on Plumeria.

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

I used Bayer's 2 in 1. I believe it's made for use on roses, but it worked well on my large potted plumeria when I used it summer of last year.

I'd be very careful exposing bees and butterflies to a systemic insecticide.

Tucson, AZ

they have to bite into the plant to be infected. if it were topical instead of system, then they would be in trouble.

I've used Orthonex successfully.

Is there any proof out there that the systemic does not effect the honey bee? Last time I looked they couldn't prove that it was safe.

Tucson, AZ

silly me! i forgot that they drink nectar. yikes!

Vieques, PR

Spray before there are blossoms. My understanding is that the Orthene simply makes the plant unattractive as food to parasitic insects, and the worst it could do to bees is discourage them from staying too long on the blossoms. Not really an insecticidal effect, more of a repellent effect.

wow. that's great. Then that can be used for vegetables too?

Yuma, AZ

I have used Admire(Bayer) in the past for white fly and aphids(and other sucking piercing bugs) with great success. It is sytemic and lasts for an extended period of time. I called my PCA(pest control advisor) he says that Admire is safe for bees. http://www.bayercropscienceus.com/products_and_seeds/insecticides/admire.html
by the way it is used on most veggies and some fruit too.

The label on each insecticide will give you guidance on how long you should wait to harvest after spraying with the product.

Yuma, AZ

Good point! It will aslo let you know how long you should wait before handling the plants after spraying.

Very safe, and I know that for sure, because I found it out in the puppy's pile (along with sticks and toys) half eaten. He is still alive and well and has a very shiney coat. ;-)
