Never warm your chickens with a black light.

Lodi, United States

I had the brilliant idea of using a 60 watt black light to warm my chicks at night. Checked the box for warnings...none. Googled it--said it would be safe. Ended up with temporarily blind chicks which fortunately recovered after a week It causes severe burning and is extremely painful for them. These are the same lights you use to make posters glow in the dark.

But weren't they the ones for reptiles?

Lodi, United States

No, I got these at Lowe's--and there is some confusion between the fluorescent ones (Wood's Light) and the incandescent kind. I think the fluorescent ones are less injurious--but they also aren't particularly warm. Poor little chicks kept peering up at them. I feel horrid.

Thanks for the info and i'm sorry your chicks eyes got injured.

I always wondered if the red heat lamps hurt their eyes it sure hurt mine when i use to use them.

Oh my! Poor babies. Who knew!!! They really need to put warnings on that product.
I am so glad they are able to see again! wowoWOW!
They are not the same as the red lights right?

Lodi, United States

No, the red lights are fine. These are black lights--they only give off a dim violet glow. And a lot of heat.

I am glad to know this now.
Thanks for the info. I am sorry you gained it first hand.
But the rest of us appreciate hearing it.
(Those are the lights that make everything glow that is white!)
