Silkies and Vitamine E and Selenium

Lodi, United States

I just had my second Silkie with wry neck--and this time it was extremely severe. The chick was born with a deformed leg that made it unable to walk normally but seemed otherwise healthy and happy and was well accepted by its hatch mates. About a week ago I noticed its spine seemed to be twisting and it was unable to move properly. This advanced very rapidly until the poor bird was corkscrewed on the bottom of the cage and I had decided I had to euthanize it.

Then it suddenly dawned on me that this was a case of wry-neck on top of the original deformity. I have been giving it the contents of a Vitamine E plus Selenium gel calp daily for a week now and the condition is rapidly resolving. The month old chick now has its head up and is gaining mobility almost hourly.

If anyone has a chick, especially a Silkie, with the symptoms of wry neck, I strongly urge them to try the Vitamine E/Selenium treatment. It has worked almost miraculously for me twice now.

I personally would never breed from a bird with this disorder, although other sources say it is okay to do so; but as a pet, once they have recovered, they are perfectly fine.

What's a less than cumbersome way to get this kind of info on the reference thread?

Lodi, United States

Sniff--you find my writing cumbersome? Sniff---and I tried so hard to be succinct.....

Clarkson, KY

It was succinct and well written, but remains, nevertheless, much longer than the average link. Did not mean to in any way belittle a valiant effort.

Restating the question, I would love to have this kind of anecdotal information also added to the reference thread, but cannot think of a convenient format. Would you have any good insights into how we might save this and other similar info in an easily accessed form on the reference thread?

(boy, I'm gettin' all careful now. wordier and wordier)

Just because you've never heard (or read) me behave doesn't mean I can't. That just means it's not my behaviour of choice...

WoW Catscan! I'm so happy for lyour great success. And what great info also. I agree, this kind of info needs to be saved for future reference. Haystack

If we put all her and other's pearls of wisdom here it might be a start.

I kinda wanted a heading so you could scroll and see what you were looking for...

Blah, blah, blah. Blah, blah?

How about PC--personal communications? Or Anecdotal? Then a summary w/wo link.

yep both those r the only things i've found to work for it. i have seen it in a few breeds i've hatched from others but usually the ones u see it the most in is silkies and polish because they have the vaulted skulls they r more prone to getting it. i have never had one live through it without the selenium so that is a must to make sure they have it because it is majorly needed to help them. i have never bred from them not sure if it is hereditary or not but i always assumed it would be since it was nerological but it can be from vitamin deficiancy and peck damage also like to the vaulted skulls or if they hit their head in the right spot hard enough so other ways they can get it to.

How about this

"DG Members Experiences"

Wry neck (Link to posting}
Black Lights
Etc..............

If the posting has additional 'stuff' not relevant to the subject, I am sure the poster would agree to edit that out . Or possibly create a new posting with just the relevant information. Third possibility is that you write what you would like to see the link contain, dmail it to the poster, who if they agree ,could create a new post copying your suggestion. That way it would still link to the original member.

Just an idea that someone else can probably improve upon.

Thanks. Yes, I think that is what I'm working towards. Just trying to keep the info easily accessed without my being the only one able to edit is a kicker. No reason not to link to these threads though.

Anyone want to take charge of the anecdotal remedies and problem solving links??
