Is that a f. columnaris in the background? What's your soil like -- looks like decomposed granite? Nice plants (of course) by the way.

No, that is an Alluaudia comosa, which doesn't like frost.
My soil might contain DG also, but is mainly clay. When it is dry I need a jackhammer to dig a hole.

In 2000 I planted small seedlings of Fouquieria columnaris. The attached photo is from 2008. This year (~ 10ft tall) one flowered a little for the first time.

Great growth on those columnaris! I have a few in the ground that are doing well but still only a few feet tall. Funny, I first grew this plant in the UK in a pot -- started pencil sized; after a few years. Still pencil sized.

I grow mine in quite sandy soil; does the clay cause you any trouble in winter (doesn't look like it).

Already seedlings of this species need stress in form of heat and drought and full sun to get fat. My plants live only on the winter rain we have here ...if at all.

The clay and its result the long lasting moist soil after the first big rain in winter is not a problem for almost any of my plants in the ground even at the very rare temps down to 24F. Only my 3 big Aloe pillansii were on the brink of surviving and therefore I gave them away.
