I picked two pine cones off a good looking tree.
The pine cones opened up and out came the seeds.I have them soaking in warm water.( They have wings on them.)
What should I do now?
Should I put in refrigerator for stratification?
I want to plant them indoors then outdoors come Spring.
Propagating Pine tree seeds
What kind of pine ? I started red pine last year. just put them out in March and covered with snow. I read somewhere that red pines don't need stratification though, so I probably could have just planted them later. Different species may have different requirements. I think if you've soaked them you will have to plant them. My preference is to start trees and shrubs outside and try to mimic nature. I did find a site that said they are best planted in the fall.
This site covers a few species, Maybe you can find some help here. http://www.treehelp.com/items.asp?Cc=SD510&iTpStatus=1&Tp=
Don't think I've seen you around before. Welcome to DG.
Hi Echoes. I joined last summer.
I'm sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I've been very busy with Christmas etc.
I got a book from our local library to identify exactly what kind of pinus I have.I don't think it is the red pine.I soaked them, stratified and they are now in moist vermiculite in the fridge till the 12 weeks are up.( according to the instructuions in this library book). After I see some sprouting, I am sypposed to immediately plant them in soil.
Note: After soaking them for 24 hrs. the wings fell off, then I rubbed the dry seed with an emery board.I was surprised to see a very small seed fall out it's outside casing. These are is planted now.
Amazing how such a small seed can grow upt to 80 ft.!(this one , I think grows one foot a year).I intend to keep it into a trained Bonsai .
