December 12 — The Full Cold Moon

A Wonderful Sight

December 12 — The Full Cold Moon
Sky watchers will be dazzled by an exceptionally high, bright, and large Moon. In fact, this Moon is 14% bigger and 30% brighter than other full Moons this year. Why? The Moon is both in its full phase and at a point in its orbit that is nearest Earth, called its perigee. When these events occur together, the Moon is closer to Earth than usual. The effect? The Full Cold Moon will appear especially large near the horizon as the Sun sets.

The Moon is also high at this time of year; when it's overhead (near midnight), it will light up the landscape. Take a magical stroll and see your world at night. You won't need a flashlight!

I have heard this moon called the Crow Gathering Moon. Under the Crow Gathering Moon, crows congregate in great flocks to feed at various sites throughout the country. In my experience, we hear flocks (literally) of crows at dawn, rising from their roosts in the pine thickets and hear them again in the evening as they go to roost. They are raucous. Although we have crows year around this phenomenon is common only at this time of year.

On January 27th the Bedding Plant Moon will begin. Looking forward to it. Come on.... Winter solstice!

No snow here... just a tad of sleet. Amazing ~ this time it was all south of us. Bright light tonight but a bit airish for that stroll to me. Perhaps tomorrow will be milder.

I had snow. It was gorgeous. At least now I have a picture of my herb garden snowed under!

Out at dusk and could see fine snow flakes in the overhead light. Brrrrr. Wishing that full moon would come back in spite of its' strong pull!

The moon was beautiful here. We had a bonfire and two great horned owls came and sat on the tops of two dead palm trees. They were beautiful in the moonlight. Today is cold, it was 48 this morning and has been falling since then. Brrrrrrrr........yesterday was 80!
