We've got an artificial wreath on the front door, and I guess this little wren decided it would make a good roost... until he got a rude awakening! Jim (DH) opened the door to take out the recycling bin, and the wren frantically flapped his way inside. He was so little and quick that I thought at first he might be a little brown bat, but then he perched on the china cabinet and we saw it was one of the little house wrens that hang around our place.
Eliot (our young cat) thought Christmas had come early, and Santa had brought the most fabulous, fascinating toy! We scooped up Eliot and put him in the downstairs bath, and then (fortunately) the wren fluttered his way into the study. We were just like the keystone cops for a while, each of us with a sweatshirt in our hands trying to capture him while he fluttered from the printer to the top of the cabinets to the bookshelf to the window to... you get the picture. We tried a quieter approach, but he was just panicked about being inside. Finally, I managed to drop my shirt on top of him when he landed on the desk, and then I was able to gently scoop him up.
We figured he was pretty exhausted from all that flying about, so instead of putting him right outside we shut him up in a cardboard box and put him into the dark bathroom (after removing Eliot-kitty from said room) so he could rest and recover a bit. I just put the box out on the porch, and he wasted no time in dashing away, probably up into the ornamental pear next to the front door. There was a little light there near the porch, so he didn't seem to have any trouble zipping away in the dark. It's not supposed to be so cold tonight, so I figured it was better to put him back out than to try keeping him overnight in his box.
I hope he's none the worse for his adventure! Eliot thinks it's the most fun we've had all week. Ha! Jim was less amused... he got pooped on. I pointed out that, at least, it was a very little bird. LOL
Here's our little visitor, perched on top of the bookcase, looking decidedly unamused.
A really truly "House" Wren
I love wrens! They are my favorite. They always have that little miffed look on their 'faces'. And the way they hold their little tails up, is adorable. They always make nests in my hanging baskets or pots of begonias. Makes it really hard to water, but they work so hard on their nests.
I am glad you were able to catch him and get him back outside!
Susan
=^..^=
Yeah, I don't think the indoor life would have suited him. :-)
I wonder if he's the same little guy who roosted in my hanging basket of strawberries (by the back door) this summer? Every so often, I'd walk under the pot at dusk, or reach up with the hose to water it, and *bam!* there's be this flurry explosion of scolding feathers as he whirred his way over to the crepe myrtle, where he'd hide until the big bad blond person had gone back inside. LOL!
I sure wish I could get a photo of him *in* the front door wreath!
One made a nest of twigs in the pocket of my dad's overalls when mom had them hanging on the wash line one afternoon. It was hilarious. And no, mom didn't leave them out there for the whole nest building and family raising thing. It did have quite an assortment of twigs in the pocket, tho.
What a funny story Jill! I'll bet Elliot would have liked to have been the one to catch that little guy. I'm glad it was the human occupants of the house though. :)
Nice one!
It's actually a Carolina Wren ;-)
Resin
Is it really, Resin? I know we have both in our yard (nesting pairs! hooray!), but this one was so small I assumed it was a house wren... it does have that characteristic Carolina stripe on its head... Thanks for LMK!
Yep, that stripe is diagnostic, House Wren doesn't have it
Resin
I mentioned the ID and the stripe to Jim... he said he didn't notice any stripe or other characteristics LOL because the little bird was either on the other side of the room or a complete blur! Maybe it's a youngster, or maybe I'm used to seeing the Carolina wrens a lot more fluffed up.
Cute story about your Carolina! LOL! I have a pair of them that are roosting in a wreath on the front porch and am still trying to get a picture of them! One year we had a bird that nested there but I was not a birder then and we just avoided using the front door until the birds were gone. We had a dairy at the time and time was limited... but I still find it hard to believe that I did not pay more attention. I look back now and think what an opportunity I ignored! I still want to slap myself when I think about it! LOL!
Our little Wrens also spend a lot of time "inspecting" our garage going through every little nook and cranny. They are such a curious bird and sure have the the most cheerful song!
We are both lucky to have these little wonders adopt us! Thanks for your story...
Rose
I love the C wrens. Last summer when I had the meal worms I would feed them on the carport. The wrens where not backwards about "asking" for a hand out. I would be working on my laptop out there and would feel something on my leg and there was a wren hopping up my leg. One day the worm feeder was empty and one of the wren fly over and landed on the laptop and looked me in the face.I get up and placed worms into the feeder. They also nested 4 feet from my chair.
Ah Wren...that is sweet! Ours eat meal worms also and do a lot of tail flicking if the worm bowl is empty!
wish they'd come here. we only have the house wrens in the summer.
They are a bold and sassy bird. I have not been able to get the worms this year so I have not set out on the carport. LOL
Funny story!! I just think they are one of the cutest little birds there is. I had a pair out in the backyard this morning again. So am hopeful they will visit often.
They're one of our favorites, too. We had at least 2 pairs this past summer. :-)
I have two wren stories some where on here one is about the worms story and the other is about the strange growth in one of my flower pots that had 4 sharp sticks and 4 pair of bright beads and was all fuzzy looking. I can't remember the name I will have to look for it.
Here they are one is "slave" and the other is "potted up"

I went back & reread wren107...those were great stories!
Thank you. I just wish the babies had stayed in the pot long enough for me to get the camera battery charged.
My back door sticks. One time it didn't shut all the way. It was only open a crack. I was watching TV and I looked up at the china cabinet in the kitchen and there was a Carolina Wren perched on top! I just opened the door and guided him toward it and he left, but it was kind of fun. Thanks for your story. It took me back to that day!
LOL... our visitor had no interest in going back out that door (despite the presence of a cat on the inside)... so we opted for the "close him in one room and capture him" approach. I'm just glad he didn't fly up the stairwell. :-)
They do look like little decorations perched on top of cabinets or china cupboards!
Hey critter....I had a C. wren do the same thing a few winters ago. He/she found the Christmas tree in the back of the house and hung out in the branches amongst the ornaments for quite a while until we could get it out. I had to move their wreath to an adjacent wall...I didn't want to discourage them from their cozy home. They are the darnedest birds....and I just love my pair. They have been here for years and "run" my yard.
My DD had a workshop that he would sit out in with the door open and the wrens would go in and hunt around for bugs then fly out. If I have the windows on the back porch open they will do the same thing.
Great wren stories! Really enjoyed them. What a boring world it would be without these little characters!
Anna, I bet that was an upset mommy wren when your dad's overalls were taken inside. I'msure your mom was a bit upset too.lol
Cute story and pictures, Critter.
