Thistle seed feeders

(Zone 8a)

After reading online reviews, I just bought several different thistle feeders. Hmmm, it only lets me post one picture, but here are links to the rest:

Originally I had only a thistle sock type feeder. After reading that most of these feeders were LESS wasteful of seed than the sock type feeders, I bought them. The sock for the sock feeder just don't last very long (I had to replace one in less than a week) and they're quite expensive. So I thought these feeders would be a Good Idea, and less wasteful of the (expensive) thistle feed.

Well the snow just melted and it looks like it snowed black snow under all of these feeders EXCEPT the original sock type feeder. And here I thought I was feeding the birds - I'm burying the grass in cast off thistle seed instead!

Is there a way to fix this? Are there feeders that are less wasteful, or catch trays, or something? Even my sunflower seed feeder doesn't make THIS much mess!

BTW, the third URL listed is the most wasteful of the lot, and I haven't put #2 out yet because it looks like it's likely to be even MORE wasteful than anything I've already got hanging. The tube feeders that I was told would be much less wasteful of seed than the sock type feeders are FAR more wasteful.

Help?

Hi Zen, How about this one?

I know I've seen this same style in metal too.

I'm with you Zen...I have a nice pile of thistle seed under my perky pet upside down feeder.

I talked to the owner of my WBU and that just is part of the problem with finch feeders. The best she could suggest was a feeder similar to the one pelle shows or a tube feeder that you can add a tray to. And if you have a large number of them like I do it really makes a huge mess. There are times I have better than 50 Gold Finch out on mine.

Zen -

I have the Perky Pet Upsidedown Feeder. The seed that hits the ground is
what the goldfinches drop after they've grabbed a beakful. I don't really mind, tho,
'cause the mourning doves & juncos snap it up. I don't know of an upsidedown
one that has a tray. And when I've used a regular tube feeder, the sparrows &
house finches take over!

The upsidedown feeder has another plus - it's a hoot to watch the other birds
land & try to figure out how the heck the GFs are getting the seed!

I don't have this problem with my upside down or any other thistle feeder but I hope the tray type helps you.

I actually got out the magnifying glass this summer and looked at the nyjer in my grass. Most of it was empty hulls, not too many whole seeds.

I was thinking about checking it to see if it was whole seed or hulls...and like the name change!!

With a few boards you could build a short box feeder with low sides to go under the feeders. The ground feeders would still use it. You would only need short legs on it.
