Pruning Hibiscus

Javea, Spain(Zone 10a)

Any tips on pruning Hibiscus. Last year I did not prune them and they flowered better than usually (maybe because we had a lot of winter rain) they are a bit overgrown for the area where they are and need a pruning.

This may be a personal thing but I found that pruning hibs is up to you. I won't prune going into winter - too much tender growth to freeze or get frost bitten. I prune only to shape it. It will get denser that way but no matter what there are always going to be branches that are going to grow longer than you want. Usually, only touch-up pruning is necessary to keep a bush in shape. You probably don't have frost and freezes in your "neck of the woods" and z10 but the bushes do appreciate a rest from their blooming.

I found this great article on Hibiscus Pruning on the web. Hope it helps:

Snug etc, that was an excellent article. Fortunately, I am doing everything right, according to them. I have done all this for so long - about 40 years - that I must have learned right a long time ago and just kept doing it. I am a terrible teacher because I haven't had the training that some have had. I just "do" it and if it works it works.
