My Ameraucana girls finally starting to lay some beautiful eggs. My first colored eggs. I have muscovy ducks (3 girls) and they give me the best eggs for omelettes and for baking but THIS was very special. Now if only my cuckoo marans would start laying. I can hardly wait. WOOHOO!!!!!
It's going to be -26 celcius with the wind tonight, brrrrr. So glad that "Duckingham Palace" I christened the coop my husband built for the ducks and chickens that, is very well insulated and they have alot of deep hay bedding to snuggle into. Their water still is not freezing in there so that is a good sign that hubby did a good job!!!!

FINALLY WE HAVE LIFTOFF!!!!! WOOHOO
woohoo!!!! That is great! I dont have any colored eggs! I am envious of your colors! LOL
So you have ducks also! Do they lay eggs like chickens, every day?
Do they get a long with your chickens? Do they stay in the chicken run with them?
How do they get water?
Where were you on the night of....
Do you feel like you just got the third degree? hhehehehe!
MBS - where are the egg pictures?! We love pictures! Duckingham Palace - that's adorable! I love it!
WoooHOOO! indeed. I am in love with my green and blue eggs...but nobody is laying them yet. It is still in the 40's here at night and my birds are still insisting on roosting on the wisteria arbor.....I can't imagine keeping them warm in below freezing temps. How did your DH insulate?

Congratulations! So glad to hear they have such a wonderful home!
Congrats on your new eggies! I just love my blue egg laying girls. They are they only ones I have right now still cranking out eggs every day. All the other weenies quit on me. I love my EEs.
Well this morning their water was frozen but I guess that is to be expected unless we were heating "Duckingham Palace" but it sure was a heck of alot better than the -22 it was outside, BRRRRRRRR. The girls seemed very happy and chatty and were waiting for their warm water, veggies, salad and layer crumble. Nobody had laid this morning before I left for work though.
As far as the insulation he used I will have to ask him, I know he used quite a bit he said so we wouldn't have to worry and he also insulated the floor.
The eggs are are pale blue/green color and the size of a medium chicken egg, alot smaller than what my ducks give me but oh they are soooooooooo purdy :-). I had a good talk with my cuckoo maran girls this morning and begged and pleaded for them to show me what they can do, lol.
Yes, my ducks and chickens get along just fine but I don't have any male ducks or male chickens either. If I had males I am sure I would have to seperate them. I use to have a male duck, his name was "Donald Trump" and being a muscovy he had the hair thing going on when he use to get excited and raise the feather on the top of his head, bad hair thing just like the real Donald Trump. I only have the 3 female ducks, had 3 others but Mr. Racoon unfortunately got 3 of them when they were younger. Donald had quite an apetite for the girls and he just wouldn't leave them alone and the poor girls would try and run away from him as fast as they can. Finally one day I said enough of this and I found Donald a great home with a flock of ducks that I think he and his new flock will be very happy. As far as the chickens, after reading about roos I decided I didn't particularly want one. I ordered the cuckoo marans and ameraucanas (females only) and there were 3 of us who split the order. I was lucky as all those I chose out of the group were female. I am not sure if the other two people that came in on the order had any roos in the bunch they took.
My muscovies, the 3 of them, are known as the "yayas", lol. I have yet to name my cuckoo marans as they are so similar in looks, hard to tell them apart. Now my ameraucanas are different, one is called "Buffy", the other "Henny" and the other "Penny". Penny is the clown of the bunch, always running to me to see what I am doing or if I have a treat for her. I find my cuckoo marans are more nervous and don't like to be picked-up and they are larger than my ameraucanas.
I will post picks of my eggs when I get home tonight.
Sorry forgot to answer the question about my ducks laying at this time of year. No my ducks stopped laying about a month ago now and I don't expect to have anything till about April. Once they start in April though, they each lay an egg a day and they are absolutely amazing to make omelettes with or bake with.
