wintersown brug seeds

Salem, OR

Has anyone had success wintersowing brug seeds? I purchased some nice seeds from e-bay and thought I might give it a try (I'm in Oregon-zone 8). I'll start a few in a windowsill also just to make sure I get at least a few blooms next summer. I've moved to a new home with no landscaping at all, right now it's just a big bunch of bare soil, just waiting to be filled up with great plants! The bad news is I don't have room inside to start seeds-this house is really small, just 500 feet. I usually have great luck wintersowing other seeds, so I think it's worth a try..

I just planted some brug seed into little pots. I put them inside zip lock baggies and have set them under florescent lights. They are from 2007 so I'm assuming they may take a while to germinate. I have them in my guest bedroom window sill that is behind a table full of brug cuttings. I hope they germinate. But someone told me they could actually take months to germinate so don't throw them away.

I don't know about planting outside now. They would probably stay dormant until the soil warms up. But then again some seeds are hardy for winter sowing.

How many seeds did you purchase? I purchased 12 from an e-bayer and gave five to a fellow dger. Seven are manageable indoors.

I have planted about 8 brug seeds from seedsprout.. I have two seedlings up, and one litle curley cue popping in, I did not soak them, or peel them. they took about 7 weeks to show ... I am still waiting on the others to pop up ..the last two I did the germination in a papertowel and baggie on top of the fridge.. they are now in a pot.. that was three days ago..

200! What are you going to do with them all?

Debra, I got mine from seedsprout also. Took seven weeks to germinate huh? Well then I'll stop looking at them everyday. These seeds were from 2007. What were yours marked? I soaked mine and then peeled the bark off. Then I put them into little pots of dirt. I wonder if I should try the paper towel/coffee filter on a couple.

Last year was my first time trying brug's seeds. They took roughly 3 weeks to germinate.

Did you have them on a heat mat or warm spot? I have mine in plastic baggies under the lights but no extra warmth other than the room temp.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I sew the seeds in small flat, kept under florescent light no heat mat. Experienced brugs growers adviced against heat mat stating that brugs seeds don't do well with them heat source. I've a makeshift gh, temp. is kept b/w 60-70F degree all through winter. (Seeds were sewn in Feb.).

well then mine will be fine in the bedroom. They are under the florescent lights and the room is about 65. I'll just be patient. I didn't sow the seed very deep. That's okay right?

mine were in a pot first no soaking no peeling, got two sporuts from that, I treid the soak in a paper towel peeled slightly, in a baggie on top of fridge they sprouted faster.. I just put seedsprouts seeds into cups and soil and sprayed the top of the soil and under the grow lights in the cabinet downstairs.. we will see..

I have four out of seven brugs seeds sprouting. They are just starting to poke through the soil. Kind of cream colored and fuzzy. I planted them 11 days ago. I'm so excited. I hope the other three will germinate too.

Once they are are completely up do I take them out of the plastic bag?

I had two little cups with a few left over seed from several Audrey Hepburn X ? seed pods from 2006 and a Maya X ? Not the way to store seed. I soaked the seed overnight and planted the AH seed in a community pot and the Maya X ? in another pot. The Maya are a curiosity because most of the seed will be albino. I have the pots in baggies, but not over heat. I can already see some roots growing down into the soil. Brugs seeds shouldn't get covered with soil, but pressed into the top of the soil to get good soil contact. The seed need light to germinate. Now I need to run down to Home Depot or Lowe's and get some shop lights to set up over the seedlings once they emerge or I can take a chance and take them out to the greenhouse where they will get normal sunlight, but colder temperatures.

Jeanne, Wait until the seedlings have their first true leaves, then slowly expose the plants to normal humidity. Once out of the baggie, you can prick out the individual seedlings and pot them in their own little pots.

ok, thanks Veronica, I will wait until they have their true leaves.

It will be a while before mine look like that Debra. I can hardly wait. It's so exciting to have successes in an area you've never tried before. My cuttings are outgrowing their location and now seed germination. I have been blessed this year in my new endeavors.

My Cherub has seven buds of fairly good size. They seem to grow a little everyday. I hope they all open. I have waited a long time for them.

Pateince is something I had to learn with the "waiting" thing , but I can assure you it will be worth the wait! ;)

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh I know it will be worth the wait. I'll be one proud momma when the Cherub blooms. Then there will be the waiting on the cuttings and the seedlings and.........it never ends. Always something to look forward to.
