anyone very familar with how to keep this one happy? should i be prunning it? it looks a bit pale and i know i have gotten lax with feeding it. it's one of my favs!
mitriostigma
This one has been a bit fussy for me. Was growing great and suddently shocked and 1/2 of it died back. May have been too wet for a while but not sure.......
When it does well, I use a low nitrogen fertilizer 2-10-10 to try to encourage it to flower profusely.
I've not yet brought it inside, it's been exposed to temps of 42 with 20 mph winds.
I've been exposed to a lot of plants in the past year since I joined DG that are a totally new animal to me, and Kal's observations remind me of a few experiences that I had with other African plants- they just up and died/defoliated. There is 0 to less information on the soil types and rainfall that these plants like, but much of Africa is extremely acidic (with poor nutrition) and very dry. Some plants may do best with simple neglect.
Ok...my usual question...how fragrant are the blooms on this one - i.e. same as other gardenias - more, less? I'd not heard of it before.
I had this one for a year or two, the scent was nice--can't remember if it was exactly like gardenias or not but it was very pretty. Didn't travel very far from the plant though, but it might be because mine was small. I didn't do a ton to mine--I'm very lazy about fertilizer and everything tends to wind up on the dry side and it was very happy (I lost it to a winter accident--big windstorm blew over the shelving unit that I had all my smaller plants on and most of the things that were on the shelf were broken and unrecoverable)
Oh ecrane....that's heart breaking...I worried about that after winds knocked my 'Duke' plumeria off the deck one time so I used bungie cords to secure my outside shelving unit - ghetto, but it worked.
I was very upset after that one--I had a billion little pots of things that I'd got from Logees and ended up losing most of them. Now I have the greenhouse so unless I get a windstorm strong enough to blow it apart I don't have to worry anymore, but since I've started collecting hibiscus I don't have room in there for a lot of other stuff--a few plumies and that's about it. So for anything else I have to stick with things that I know will be hardy here.
God bless you having the greenhouse. My "greenhouse" is also known as my living room and master bathroom...LOL. Was the combination of many additional tropicals (to include Brugs and many jasmines - heaven help me) and limited room that caused me to down size the plumies I had...along w/non-hardy EE's. Funny thing is you baby and hover over the plumies as you're trying to root them and then once they start growing there's no stopping them!!!
The greenhouse was a great investment for me--I don't have room for a lot of plants in the house and while I love plants I really don't want that amount of mess inside the house with the bugs, dirt, falling leaves/blooms/etc. At my old house I got away without the GH because the winters were ever so slightly milder and I had a covered patio that I wrapped with greenhouse plastic for the winter and that did fine, but here I didn't have a patio like that so I decided to get a real greenhouse instead.
ok Chantell, to ME, the mitriostigma is one of those i always want to have around, undemanding,(which we learned here) but it has a scent that reminded me of the plumerias on my trip to Fiji (that was some years ago so my memory may be skewed...and i don't have room for a plumie now) but it Does bloom very often through the year and as i have it inside, i enjoyed it quite a bit. i mean, a lot! mine's fragrance would carry across a room. it's very much a slow grower so it is easy to have inside for years. my 'greenhouse' is my livingroom too!
Oh mercy...another to add to the "need" list...who needs furniture any way...think of all the 10" pots that could fit where the love seat's hogging all the room....ROTFLOL
