Night Blooming Jessamine

Perris, CA(Zone 9a)

Over the past three years I have purchased or been given three Jasmines (Night Blooming Jessamines). About a month ago, they bloomed but the blossoms were just green (no color otherwise). The blossoms were not fragrant at all. Other than this they have never bloomed at all. They are in partial shade (good sun exposure during the afternoon).

About two years ago, we removed a juniper tree in front of the plants.

Please advise.

Thanks,

Chuck

Did you go smell them in the evening? They don't smell much during the day but at night you should have noticed the scent. The only other thing I can think of is that your night-time temps were already too cold and maybe the scent doesn't carry on cold nights like it would on warmer ones. The one I have here at this house hasn't bloomed yet, but the one at my old house typically bloomed a little earlier in the year when the evenings were still a little warmer.

hi chuck, my experience with these creatures is that the fragrance is so shrill and overpowering that i can't have them inside but they also are fragrant only at night. are they outside and you are inside when they are 'emitting'?

I don't know this for sure but it seem to me that as the plant matures frag. is more prominent. When I first got this plant, I was disappointed because the first time it flowered I couldn't smell anything. It has improved over time. Also, I think ecrane is right about frag. not carrying as much in cooler temps. I don't know why exactly, but it has happened to me.

Ok...after lusting after this plant year after and year and something happening each year...finally this year I was blessed with blooms. The blooms were mostly a green color - I didn't care about how they looked visually, I wanted desperately to smell what everyone had raved about. I didn't find it to be over powering but mine (despite being 6 ft) was a young'un...just got rec'd it's baby self in it's 3" pot this past spring...and Nery may have a point about the fragrance intensifying as it ages...we'll see. The fragrance was absolutely worth waiting for!!! I agree in that the scent was noticeable evening and very early morning....now that was amazing to come down to in the AM!! I'd brought my pot indoors by Oct. since our temps were dipping at night and I wasn't taking any changes w/this one esp. since I saw the buds forming...whaaa whoooo!!!

i will say that while i had mine, i was living in one 300 sq. ft. room so, yes, it was overpowering! (i had to sleep with it all night!) but if you can get some distance, i bet it is a real treat.

Dear Dabneyrose,

The jasmines are about six feet away from our front doorway. The blooms are long gone but I am still hoping the plants will bloom again next year.

Thanks,

sounds like the perfect spot...is there a bedroom window nearby to open? That's where i would put some, Chuck. to let them drift in at night, gently!
