Hello Brug People!

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

I haven't visited y'alls forum in a while, but my no-name pink brugmansia was blooming so prettily this morning that I thought I'd share. The plant itself is kind of ugly this year -- not enough rain, but the blooms are so clear and wonderful in this brisk weather.

One in the sun.

There are more than 30 flowers on it and maybe an equal number of unopened buds. It smells wonderful. My shredded white is blooming too and the sweet olive is blooming nearby. They all just smell fab!

It's amazing what difference it makes being a few miles farther north from the Gulf of Mexico than Houston is. It also helps that you are in the city. I'm glad your Brug is still blooming and producing that wonderful fragrance.

We had our first freeze night before last but came close several nights before. On one of those nights, sometime before the temperature started to come back up, the wind blew the protective bubble wrap off my one large Brug planted in the ground. Needless to say, buds and leaves are gone from the top part of the plant. I haven't taken off all the burlap to see how the bottom half is faring. I'm trying to protect the "Y" from freezing so I can have blooms earlier come spring.

I always try to cover mine too, but it never works. The top part always freezes, but that triggers a growth spur that produces prettier foliage. We haven't had a freeze yet, but it's gotten into the mid-30s.

I hadn't really looked at my shredded white, but I knew I was smelling it. All but one of the flowers has fallen off, but that one is super fragrant! It has more buds, so hopefully it won't freeze anytime soon!

Could elph's brug be Frosty Pink? I love that shredded white. I have a small plant, can't wait til it grows like yours.

Congrats, Elphaba! I have one blooming for the first time right now. I'll have to see if I can get a pic of it. Crazy brug - all summer long nothing! Now it has about 20 blossom buds and the one that's opening. Well, I'm just glad I get to see some even at this late date.

I was making the same complaint about mine a while back and my neighbor told me that even though brugs grow in the tropics, they grow in the mountains where the temps are cooler and rain is plentiful. I never checked to see if that's true. I'm very lazy about reading about plants! If true, that might be why they sometimes don't do as well in the summer. My shredded white though is a strong plant and bloomer all year, much more so than the pink, so variety is probably important too. Y'all would know more than I would!

I planted the one that's blooming last March. It was 6 inches tall and now it's about 4 feet tall. You're right about some brugs groing in the mountains. I think the one that's blooming now is a noid white (granddaughter took off tags) but could be Inca Sun. I won't know til the blossom opens. I need to focus on those that do well in the heat since we have more heat in Phoenix. Anyhow, I have wondered if it was busy growing a root system, and once the hot weather was over it could spare some energy for blossoms. Hmmmm....

Inca Sun is a gold colored Brug. http://www.logees.com/prodinfo.asp?number=R1124-4
It might be best for the tag-less Brugs to remain noids.
