modem crashing

Of late my Motorola modem has been crashing. It will show the interned light let red and it takes me to the Home Summary page.. I phoned AT&t Thrusday and they sent me out a modem. A while ago, the same thing happened. They asked me if I had a router and I told them I had no idea but I do have a wireless printer. Might you offer any suggestions? Lee
BTW, the modem gets guite hot.
