Hoya Book

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Just read about this on the other hoya forum:

http://www.freewebs.com/botanova/books.htm

Has anyone read/heard about this?

The photographs of pages certainly make it look worthwhile!

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I have several friends in the forum from Spain, that got it and they are very happy with it.

I think I just found my Xmas present to myself. Thanks!!

Christine

(Zone 1)

I read about it on the Stemma Forum and I'm hoping someone will do a group order ... I really want that book!

Forgive me, I'm mentally challenged, :) but how much is the book exactly?

Thanks.
Susan

"Outside Europe: USD 45 incl postage"

That makes it about $50 or so Canadian - we always get the short stick ... sigh.

Christine

North Augusta, ON

OUCH!!

For $50, it better be one good book!! Tell ya what Christine, you buy it and I'll borrow it ;)

(Zone 1)

Looks like it has great photo's and info: http://www.freewebs.com/botanova/Bild2.jpg well worth the price I think!

North Augusta, ON

Actually, they mentioned a discount for multiple purchases...wonder how much of a discount?

(Zone 1)

Oh yeah, I forgot about that ... I guess the discount would depend on how many books were ordered. I like the idea of a Christmas present to myself!

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Anders said he can ship up to 6 books for free costing the same to him. I would write him and ask what the 'deal' would be. 45$ including shipping is a heck of a good price!!!!

You're on LeeAnn!

Christine

It is a good reference book, and the photos are very nice...the descriptions are concise and to the point..there are useful chapters on propogation, a little taxonomy, cultivation tips etc. Each Hoya description tells you how difficult or easy it is for that species and if your space is limited, this can help you decide what plants to buy
If you like Hoyas, you'll enjoy the book, I think. Not a big book, but limited runs like this specialist book are always going to cost more than huge gardening encyclopedias when they print tens of thousands

I want the book also................glad to know others want it also. I hope it isn't too hard for me.........a beginner.......

(Zone 1)

Gail, I'm pretty much a beginner with Hoya's too but I want that book too ... if I had it right here I could go back and re-read it! Looks like it has some great info and photo's as well.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I just bought 2 of them in the same order...40$ each and free shipping. Paula and I are combining the shipping....doesn't make sense for us to join other orders so far away. $40 worth of knowledge I didnt have before goes a long way!!!

Carol

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Now I am thinking that it may be too hard for me, Lin............you know so much more about hoyas........do you remember where that site was you pointed out one time where we could identify our hoyas. I ordered 10 from that Secret Rare Garden...........cowboyflowerman...........and they are nice starts.......really unusual ones.......you and I need to stay in touch for trades when they take off growing. Those I have on the front porch are in heaven...................with the poly stretched around and heaters at night when they need it.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

From what i understand, the book deals with where the hoyas were found growing in their natural habitat... The gem in that knowledge is that if you find, for instance, that a hoya you have been giving the same light as H. australis was found at 4000 feet growing at the base of a tree.... well...now you know you are not growing it right and you know how better to treat it. I don't think there are easy books and difficult books about growing... Now, if he went into the method of tissue culture or photographing pollinia I would think - whosh..who wants to know that?...over my head.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh, thanks Carol....................I just want to know how to grow each one and identify each one. I let it get too cold before I put the poly up around the porch and my hoya Imperialis started to turn yellow and drop leaves and runners like crazy. As soon as I got the poly up.........and heaters.........she is so happy and has not dropped a leaf since. In fact she has started growing again...........I had no idea she couldn't take 48 degrees.........

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

very few hoyas, in fact, can take below 50... There are some temp. tolerances on my website...

Read the book last night - it is well done. Photos are marvelous! I don't agree with some observations on the 'ease' of growing and wish he would expand on information about fertilization (often he says that too many nutrients alter the shape of the leaves but doesn't explain about how). I came to the realization that we, perhaps, fertilize too much growing our hoyas and that, of course, in nature they don't get fertilized, just the odd bird poop or bug poop...but then, the hoya plants in the wild generally look awful!!!!

Good information on growing dry or giving lots of water....

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

Hi All!!! Hope you mend quickly Awanda!!!

I've tried contacting the website to order a book but I haven't had a reply. How did Yall order yours?

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Directly from the website...maybe they are down for the Holidays.

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

Jerri when I ordered mine, they were leaving on holiday the next day. I think Anders said they would be back around the 1st of January.

Blessings,
Awanda

PS, thanks for the well wishes...the body doesn't heal as quickly when we age:-).

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

Thanks so much!!! I check back with them after the 1st of the year.

LOL!!! Awanda I know exactly what you mean.

TUCSON, AZ(Zone 9a)

Jeri11, Just reread my info. They will be back from there vacation Jan. 7th. And you will LOVE !! the book. Well worth the wait & the money. Binky :))

North Augusta, ON

You all should post some of the information in the book for us ^_^

(Zone 1)

I haven't ordered the book yet but plan on giving myself an early birthday present and placing an order for one in the next week or two.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lin, I am going to go take a picture of the only unknown hoya and dmail to you.............she so wants a name......(lol) and she isn't in the book..........

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Why don't you post it here?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Ok...........thanks

I started with cuttings last summer so she has never bloomed for me. The color is naturally a lighter green but if I fertilized like I should they might be a tad darker. Very few pronounced veins.......if you need a closeup of a leaf I can go take one.........thanks

Looks like H. australis. And if the leaves are smooth on both sides, it would be ssp. tenuipes.... It is a great plant, blooms profusely once a year....I forget if it is spring or fall, but I think spring.

Carol

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Thank you, Carol. I went outside to look and the back sides are as smooth or smoother than the front sides. My job in Januarary (among many) are to tag every single hoya I have. Now, I can do it.

I ordered a H. tsangii and here is what she looks like............her leaves are not long and narrow like the one in the hoya book which blooms yellow. Could her leaves not be longer because she is a newly rooted plant?

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

For years your plant was sold as H. tsangii or H. sp. DS something...maybe 128. The hoya in the book is the true H. tsangii and the one you have is not. It is the H. sp. DS-?. Can someone fill in the number? Most dealers never care what the names of the hoyas are, so they put anything on it they want to.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

DS-70 is what the book said..............I wrote the dealer and told him he had the wrong name.........
Now I can change the name..........thanks again

(Zone 1)

LOL Gail, I just answered your d-mail and looks like I got one right! I thought it looked like australis. I have one that looks very much like it (it came from you!) and it bloomed for the first time this past summer with wonderfully fragrant white flowers! I have H. ds-70 and your second photo looks identical! Mine is one of the Exotic Angel plants and has grown like gangbusters the past two years.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am very excited about hoyas this year.........

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Oh, that's right...DS-70. 128 is another one... Glad you got it.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

The only reason I know it is because it is in my new hoya book that I love!
