Will rabbits be a problem for my bale gardening?

Johnson City, TN(Zone 6b)

Kent and all,
Is there a "no rabbit" clause in the no weeding, no hoeing, no tilling aspect of strawbale gardening?
I read somewhere that rabbits won't go over an 18 inch fence but will they burrow under a straw bale? Our neighborhood is full of cottontails and my little poodle is no deterrent. I'm so excited to plan for a new kind of garden but I want to know all the possibilties. Devota

Before I put my deer fence up this year I always had a few rabbits roaming in and around my bales. Never noticed any problems.

I doubt a rabbit would like to live in or under a wet bale.

Ah. That sounds right. Thanks.

Devota, I had squirrels that loved to go from one ripe tomato to another and take a bite out of each one. I put bird netting around them, any kind of netting will do, and I guess they were afraid of getting trapped in it because they quit doing that.

This year I planted one Sunsugar tomato plant for them and they love them and didn't touch the rest. I put it right on the end of the row.

Jeanette, So you planted the Sunsugar for them? I do have a nice stand of clover for the rabbits. We'll see what happens.

I've read with interest and enjoyed many of your posts. I don't know how I will contain myself for the next 3 months. Well I actually do have a lot to keep me occupied on decent winter days. I am putting in 2 rain barrel systems for my gardens.

I live on a brick to begin with, [this red clay.] In addition, we have severe droughts in this area in mid summer to late fall. However we do get showers in between that simply run off the ground because it is so hard. I intend to capture the rain that we do get and use it for my little raised bed and the bale garden I can't wait to start. D in TN

I didn't plant the Sunsugar specifically for them, but they seem to think I did. Those are so good.

Let me know how your rain barrel system works 'cause I am doing the same thing. However, I don't know if I will finish it until spring since if we get anything coming down it will most likely be snow.
