i cant get my pink perfektion to root

(dana)Owensboro, KY(Zone 6a)

ok its been like almost 2 months since i bought it of ebay . and ive cut it twice alredy . first i did the orchid moss , it got soft . i cut it and put it in a bubbler . it got nubbies and i put it in dirt . it sat and sat and no leaves . so i tuged on it and t came right out all soft and mushy on the bottom so i cut that away and back into the bubbler it went . then it got big nubbies but hollowed out the bottom 2 inches . luckily it was a big cutting. so i cut it back again and its in some water by the sink . i thought id lay it sideways in the dirt so i can monitor it better . does any one have any suggestions .

Some people have very good luck rooting in the fall/winter. I never do. My suggestion to people is usually this. Buy cuttings in the spring/summer and rooted plants in the fall/winter.
Of course if somebody gives you cuttings in the fall it's worth a shot at rooting them, but when you are paying good money and want the best chance of getting it to take root, buy cuttings when the days are longer and and the climate is warmer. It's just a suggestion.

the funny thing is , i bought that one and havnt lost one of any that have been given to me . i even cut off 2 nasty parts that had a leaf joint or what ever its called ( of different kinds) and put them in dirt . even they rooted but this one flat out refuses to take and its pretty fat too .

I would rinse it off in warm water, then lay it flat in a large pot with moss mixed with peat, moisten the medium before you lay it in there, cover with a baggie and put it in some warm lighted area.. I bet it takes off.. put some rooting solution in the peat moss mix.. just a suggestion..Debra

I use only distilled water to root and all the ones I rooted this fall have done great! I lost some of the ones I rooted in the summer

In general I've come to find out that double blooming brugs are more difficult to root. Also, because of their finicky culture, most cuttings are not the best of quality cuttings? Green tips cutting especially are harder to root. I recently received 8 different types of cuttings. 7 rooted, the one that didn't was a greentip cutting.

this one was a big 1 -2 inch thick what looks like a trunk cutting

Like Gary, I don't have as much success rooting cuttings in late fall/winter. Early in the fall I received some cuttings from Dollie. They all rooted and are now in 3-1/2" X 3-1/2" X 5" pots in the greenhouse directly across from the propane heater. Later I bought some through the co-op and received some from Gordon. My DH was very unhappy because I took over most of the kitchen table to root. It's been a shooting match. Some big fat ones had no problems rooting. Others have been in water for several weeks without producing so much a a white nub. They haven't rotted, but neither have they produced nubs. I had two green cuttings actually produce lots of white nubs, but the tops have died down to the water line. A couple of roots have grown from them so I potted them up today.

I usually root in tap water laced with H2O2 because I have greater success. I tried a little experiment after the cuttings, I purchased throught the co-op and those I got from Gordon, had been in water for over a week. At that point, many had white nubs or the beginnings of nubs. I have had some cloning gel. The kind you pour into a cup and stick a cutting into. I cleaned the containers, changed the water and added about a tbl of the gel to each container. Roots started to grow by the following day. The top growth also seems healthier with larger leaves for the size of the new shoots. However, the gel hasn't had any effect on the cuttings that haven't produced nubs. Now new top growth, No nubs. No rot either. Oh, well.

I haven't had much success with orchid moss although I might try the wrap method with the moss. No large pots though those can be deadly to cuttings by providing too much moisture. If I can find the air pump I bought last winter, I'll put those last few cuttings in a bubbler.

As long as I can keep them from rotting, there's still a chance they'll root.

i did the orchid moss with most and it worked well except with the doubles . i was worried about laying it on its side because at least if it rots from the bottom i can cut it . if it rots up the side im out of luck .

Okay what is cloning gel??

All my cuttings are from fall cuts. I put some in water with H202 and some in bubbler, then moss cups. All got some nubbies. Only the moss pots produced roots. They got potted in Miracle Grow soil and are doing great. I have given them all 12 hours of light. Four in the am from florescent lights. Then five hours of sunshine through the window and then three hours of florescent. I also spray daily with the recipe. Even the sticks. I lost two out of 21. and one was a green tip. Not much to there to work with. The other was a sacrificial lamb for this newbie. I didn't really know what I was doing. Not that I do now but I have a broader understanding of how it all works.

It's a gel containing a mix of vitamins, hormones, minerals that help to stimulate root development. Some gels contain anti-fungal agents. A cutting is usually dipped into the gel and planted in potting mix. The one I used is supposed to be poured into a small cut and a small cutting inserted into the gel until it roots.

Where do I buy rooting gel? I have the powder form.

emh thanks so much , ill keep you posted . i have it sideways and there is one nubbie still from before . everything below that got cut . so i put the nubbie side down and there is a little green leaf poking out but thats been there .

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Shirleyd, I bought the gel from Charley's Greenhouse:
http://www.charleysgreenhouse.com/index.cfm?searchflag=1&page=_search&s=cloning+gel&PageNum_newsearchQuery=1&varShowPer_custom=12&varOrderby=ProductId&varSorting=ASC&varColumns=3&f=1&enter.x=0&enter.y=0&mtype=3
I purchased number 8145 GEL dispenser for $12.95. There are other gels on this link, but this was the cheapest. I felt it was a reasonable one to start with.

Iris, too bad I don't have pink perfektion or I would give you a cutting. I have a Snowcone that won't root. It's fine and not rotting or anything but no white nub showing. I've had it in water for a good 2 months now. Everything else I have either rooted or died. The ones I killed are the skinny green ones. I killed Sweetheart - I think that is a double white. So sad. :(

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

I started out with 5 Orange Sunshine cuttings and am down to 3. The 2 green ones rotted, but the last 3 are behaving like your nub-less ones. I need to try using the bubbler, but can't find the one I bought last year. It's in the barn somewhere. I end up with two of things sometimes because it's easier to buy a replacement than to spend hours going through the barn. It's really not a barn anymore. It's become a storage shed.

Orange Sunshine? That sounds pretty. I will have to look it up.

DeRidder, LA(Zone 9a)

LiliMerci, Orange Sunshine is a BEAUTY! What's really unique about this brug is that she fits in a hanging basket! Maggie & Ken gave me this plant at the DGRU this past summer. SPECIAL THANKS AGAIN MAGGI & KEN!!! I love her! O.S. has a light fragrance, and doesn't wilt in our summer heat. Very hardy brug.

How cool is that. I've never heard of such a thing. Is it considered a drawf?

DeRidder, LA(Zone 9a)

This summer was the first I had heard of the hanging basket brug, O.S. I don't know anything about this brugs background....Maggi & Ken would have that information, I'm sure. I've been meaning to check with them. It's a very interesting brug to grow.

(dana)Owensboro, KY(Zone 6a)

well its still going soft and its a fraction of the size it was but i wont give up till its gone . it is back in water .

Fort Lauderdale, FL(Zone 10b)

hanging basket plantings are not the only unusual way to grow brugs. There is a nursery in Japan that has managed to grow them on a trellised arbor creating a dramatic effect of hanging blooms.

The trellised effect of the blooms is the most fascinating thing I have seen in a long time. I just wish I could figure out a way to do that! Of course, I would have to start with a green house------
