Tropical Garden #25
per Rita's request:
we came from here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/925783/
Oh Rita--how neat that your powderpuff is blooming! Mine has only a few here and there and most are spent. I have very little in the garden that is blooming now. What is the secret with your crotons? Mine do not do so well. I gave up on them for awhile but bought one this fall to try again at it.
Patty
Phughes, thank you very much. I have been enjoying the powder puff plant ever since I bought it in bloom, from Zone 9 in Houston.
Good luck with your new Croton. Sorry, I do not have a secret. I have had that one in the first picture for over 10 years. I do know that they like to be misted and water frequently.
I was so surprised that my croton was in the atrium of a house we bought in Victoria. No sun. Just bright light. I guess I assumed that it needed lots of sun. Wrong! Reading up on it back then I found that it preferred bright light but not a lot of sun - infact no sun. That's all I know which of course makes me an expert - LOL Luck to you.
Ann
I wondered if they preferred sun or filtered sun. Lowe's had them in full sun. I had mine in full sun at first and it started to lose leaves. I have since then moved it into the covered patio and I don't think it is losing leaves like before. Also good to know that it likes frequent watering. Thanks for the input ladies.
Wow Rita, what a pretty plant the powder one is!
Did you all read RJ's article on #24, he posted the link. Great story, I loved it!
I know Dutchlady, as I was reading it, I could only think of my darling Husband! He has to have an opinion now for everything I plant and do, sometimes is great but others grrrrrrrrrrrrrr! LOL.
Yeah I can relate too. The blah, blah, blah sound just like something my DH would say. Enjoyed the article RJ!!!
LOL, glad you enjoyed it.
Patty remember when you told me about Gails SUV packed to the ceiling with stuff? I do the same thing, just go wild,. I'd pull up in the driveway with pots, plants, soil, trellises you name it..and boy did I get griped at. I finally wised up and began employing more stealth and smaller hauls...anyway that inspired me to write about it. On the other hand, can you imagine having to divide up the garden, debate on landscaping, plants and styles?
I'm now coping with missing tools, fertilizers depleted and not replaced and an undiscerning un-informed mega pruner!

lol
My cestrum nocturnum bloomed a while back. The fragrance was very sweet and powerful, but I found it to be quite unlike my jasmines. I don't find it headache inducing like some folks do.
My passiflora caerulea, which I planted outside last summer, is still green and fresh. It hasn't lost a single leaf and our temps have hit the high teens at night. I suspect some of the passifloras will need to be reevaluated for cold hardiness.

rj, loved it. Now I know where you've been hanging out. Because of the necessity a few months ago, Mike has gotten a lot more interested. Helps without griping and asks names of plants and .....is this one that Randy brought?
PK
Here's a winter blooming heliconia...aptly named...Heliconia angusta "Yellow Christmas"

That's funny Christi.....if it's over 6 feet tall, yep...it's one Randy brought.
I'm still working on Heliconia! It'll happen!
Jerry ..this fall has been an outstanding one for vines!
wow thank goodness you had that green house.....James
RJ, love your article and my DH is just like that. He groans whenever he knows that he is going to loose some "lawn" to more of my planting!
Texas, love those flowers! Look like some kind of jasmine?
Well, thank you for sharing your beautiful tropicals as it's freezing cold here!
Really Jerry? I don't recognize it at all...I'm going to have to track that name down!
It's very cool.
Thanks lilimerci...! boy was it chilly here last night 39F, bouncing to 79F tommorrow, back down again...poor plants
Thanks...
I'm going to march over there and demand one....lol
I have some of those. I got a little one from a plant trade. I have them planted next to my Golden Showers by my arbor. May be they will choke out my Golden Showers as those roses have been disappointing. I saw some photos of some on a fence mixed with red cypress vine. Very pretty.
I read they produce seeds and flowered late in the year, October. I guess that's why they are have AUTUMN in their name. I hear they are quite invasive in your zone RJ. If you want to wait for next year fall, send me a dmail, I will send you some seeds or cuttings or new shoots. I might even have some seeds somewhere. Lemme look.
RJ, I hope i can talk Placenciarita into making another trip to RJ;s WORLD FAMOUS TROPICAL JUNGLE GARDEN this spring!!!!!!!! Rita hint hint!!!!!!!!!! Jerry
That would be fun.
I want to tour your gardens too. I'm considering doing the hardscaped cold frames like you do.
I think the Basiliensis is a bigger bloom...they're huge
I love the greens, the philos, the EE's love it...yes want to visit.
I'll save you another snow bank- that varigated plant you liked last year.
Thankyou all for the wonderful photos. Been away for a while. Gustav ate most of my tropicals.LOL But thats ok , spring is on the way. Rita and Jerry, this is the time of the year I wished I lived next door to ya'll, so I could go sit in your greenhouses. LOL
