Hurry outside and look tonight...southern sky. Crescent moon, Jupiter and Venus. Won't have this configuration again until 2032. I know, I know you have heard this on the news and read it in the paper. Just don't want you to miss it.
Last time until 2032
Outstanding photo, Christi. May I ask what camera you used?
Yes the photo is very good. I have been trying to get a pic and all I get is three blobs :(

MVC-CD350 SONY SMART ZOOM. It is about 5 years old and on todays electronics market it is an antique. There are all kinds of settings and I just realized I didn't check any of them. Oh, well, too late now. I did use the close up zoom. As if that would make any difference a couple of million miles away. hahaha.

Very cool! I did run out and look, but I'm only just now posting to tell you so.
Not being a pagan I did not perform any sort of ritual, just enjoyed looking at a cool configuration in the sky. I did wonder, though, if this sort of an event had an significance back in ancient days. I'm sure this meant something to the Egyptians, for example. Anybody know?
I didn't see this post until today, but I did run out and look at it last night and I tried to take photos! In my photos, Venus and Jupiter look like zigzags and the moon isn't much better! Your pic is wonderful! It was quite a magical experience.
I don't know about the Egyptians Terri. Someone else will have to chime in. I remember when I was a child like 6 yrs old, living in Puerto Rico, Venus was really close to a crescent moon like that and people thought the moon was breaking up. I bet ancient people did have some kind of ritual. It just begged for one!
Indeed!
I'm no photographer so it was just dumb luck that that everything was clear.
i saw that last night! it was spectacular, as is your picture. i hadn't heard about it and meant to look it up today.......forgot until i saw your thread. thanks.
Looked a little while ago and there is a ring around the moon. The planets are barely visible because of the clouds. Used to hear that a ring around the moon meant rain in three days. Old wive's tale, I'm sure.
I saw it too, it was gorgeous !!!
Actually there is something to those old wives taling. LOL
Not that I can explain it well but it has to do with moisture content in the air that makes it look as if there is a ring around the moon. That moisture will often fall as rain, or snow or sleet later in the night or the next morning. Pollution can give the same effect. The pollution in the air will reflect the moons light just like the moisture content only deliver no rain.
Growing up in the north, we had sun dogs that foretold incredibly cold weather and the Aurora Borealis or northern lights which were just plain magnificent in spite of the cold.
Nice photo! Thanks for sharing.
Where was that, pod?
Great photo, Christi!
....as it was "esplaned to me, Lucy....."
Something to contemplate.... because each object varies in distance from the Earth, the time it takes light to get here varies. For the reflected light from each object to reach us at the same time, the light had to leave the Sun at different times. Light from the Sun to Moon to Earth takes about 8 minutes. Light from the Sun to Venus to Earth takes about 14 minutes and light from Sun to Jupiter to Earth takes about 96 minutes. Another way to look at it is if you could turn the Sun off with a switch, the Moon would the first to "disappear" after 8 minutes, then Venus after 14 minutes and finally Jupiter after 96 minutes.
Now my head is spinning.......
Glad this popped up again... my head is spinning too.
I had typed a length answer to your question LouC ~ where was that? Guess I forgot to hit send. Sorry!
The big bad cold state of MN.
Good morning, girls. Wish we were all close and we would have a biscotti with our coffee and just do nothing to start off the week. Oh! That's what I'm doing anyway.
Aloha,
Princess Kilikina
