Hello fellow Texas gardeners. Just wanted to pass on that LiveMonarch.org is giving away free milkweed seeds for SASE or you can get 50 seeds for each dollar you donate. Since Monarch is our state butterfly, thought you guys might be interested in helping the critters out by growing some milkweed. :)
Free Milkweed Seeds
Is there any interest in milkweed in Texas?
aardvark7,I went to the website and they also have plants. Would grown plants live here in a greenhouse? Or would it be better to get seeds then plant them this spring? I will atleast get alot of seeds. And thanks for the info on this website. Jerry
aardvark, afraid no one answered because many already grow and trade milkweed. Frostweed gave me a plant just a month ago and wonder of wonders it has a monarch cat on it. I have it in the greenhouse and am crossing my fingers that it survives the winter.
The cat, not the plant.
Thank you for the information. Hopefully someone will come along that doesn't have a milkweed and take advantage of the offer.

Jerry - LouC is growing one in her greenhouse with a monarch cat on it so if you have the space in your greenhouse, go for it. I'm trying wintersowing this year for the first time and decided to try it on the milkweed since I've heard milkweed WSs well. But I am concerned that my plants will be pretty puny when the migration north occurs so I may supplement those with a few plants purchased from the site to make due in Spring. For a good cause right? :)
LouC - I had to bump my thread up to the top which is why I replied to my old post. I posted the same info on the butterfly/hummingbird forum last week and I guess it was overlooked and fell to the bottom of the pile. When someone 'revived' it by responding, people saw it for the first time and responded and looked up the livemonarch site. Like Jerry may not have seen this last week but saw it today after I bumped it back up to the top. So I'm just trying to let people who don't have any milkweed know that they can get some. I felt a little weird bumping my own thread back up to the top, but it really was for informational purposes. Good luck with your milkweed and your cat! That's a pretty good deal - free monarch cat comes with the milkweed. :)
aardvark7, louC, Thanks for info will order plants and seeds.
I my opinion it is perfectly ok to bump your thread. When you still need a response, why not?
Three years ago this past October, I was standing on my deck just enjoying the evening.
Suddenly I realized that those were not leaves falling from the sky. It was in fact, Monarchs coming in for a rest during the night. I called my neighbors and we stood as still as a statue while we were quite sure we were on Holy Ground. The butterflies covered every spot on the trees. They rested here for the night. What an experience.

Oh that sounds so awesome! Kinda heightens one's resolve to help the little guys and gals out! :)
Christi, I'm jealous! Someone gave me a butterfly milkweed last spring in College Station. It grew up this year and is still blooming its head off (along with the mexican mint marigold). It has been so pretty. I had a ton of monarchs in my yard this year, but they all went to the butterfly bush. Not a single cat on the milkweed. Can't figure that one out.
I have pictures but they seem to buried somewhere in Picassa and I can't get them to come up. At the time I had butterly plants but no milkweed.
