I've been surfing the DG Marketplace and Ebay and have not found Island Girl for sell. Any suggestions? I've googled it as well but no one has it in stock.
Island Girl
JustJen and Seedpicker (DG members) have it listed on their trade lists.
Its hard to get brugmansia cuttings if you are just starting out.I was blessed with a trade and got brugmansia cuttings and one was already rooted. If you can't get it in a trade then i would buy it.

I know - it's so sad that people aren't more willing to share cuttings and seeds.
Anyone who grows Brugmansias most likely has lots of cuttings and probably seeds, too. When people share, it always comes back to them, and when they don't, that comes back to them, too.
Selfishness is such a bad trait - after all, almost all of us got our start growing Brugs because of the generosity of others.
I have always been blessed to have DG friends who share so freely with me. Calalily (Susan) gave me my first cuttings, and I still have those plants! I had nothing to give her but postage, and I will always be grateful to her for being so generous.
I just have the common yellow or pink ones, but if I did have the more sought-after ones, I would share, as a 'thanks' and to honor those who have given me my starts.
I hope some of the DG'ers who have lots of different ones will share some cuttings with you - I will definently pray about that!
AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Most people have already cut thier brugs for the year..
yep, my cuttings are either rooting or just put into pots. Now next fall when these have been in the ground since spring I hope to have more than enough cuttings to share. I got all but two of my brugs from other generous dgers.
Gee, I had no idea just how hard packaging up over 60 cuttings and make sure the right ones went to the right person, in the right weather, and packed right could be, lol! Now I need new pruners--they sure got a work out.
I have sure learned a lot about respecting the co-op folks, doing occasional orders and sending all at once are 2 entirely different things. Perhaps some made the same mistake as me and tried to do too much too quick and it turned into work, lol! But I too, felt the need to give back and fully believe that most newibies are better off starting the easier ones, especially in the winter. I so remember losing 70% of my cuttings my first winter--OUCH!
This is my first year doing it.I know i will be willing to share to the ones that is just starting when ever my get big enough.I know how hard it is to get cuttings.Heavinscent is a angel, she is the one that got me started with my cuttings.I can never thank her enough.

By the way loveisagypsy when it comes to brugmansia cuttings.Always check the threads because they go like flying colors.
Jo,
I take offense at your unwarranted accusations. I really enjoy the comradery and generosity of members of this forum. People are willing to share cuttings and seeds. You just have to be there at the right time, but those resources are not limitless. Not everyone, who grows Brugs, has bundles of cuttings and seeds lying around at all times. Many of our members use the sale of Brug plants, cuttings and seeds to supplement their income. Would you begrudge them their income? Their generosity lies in sharing what they have learned. Other DGers share through other avenues. Some of us lose our collects now and then. I share when I have cuttings or seeds, but last year I lost my collection because I was too ill to go out and water my plants. This year drought and hot weather kept many a Brug collection barely growing.
Inflammatory words are so easy to use, impossible to prove, but nevertheless deeply injurous to everyone concerned. So much more injurous because it is couched in religious fervor.
I taught 4th and 5th graders for 12 years. It didn't take me long to figure out that providing basic school supplies out of my meager yearly budget was a horribly waste of resources. Pencils would get sharpened down to a nub or lost on the first day. Paper was thrown away at an alarming rate, etc. If a student had to provide his own supplies, he was much more careful with them. Lesson? Why must the few always have to provide for the many? If they don't, for whatever reason, then they are called selfish. There really is nothing wrong with the many providing their own.
I really don't want to start a nasty controversy, but neither do I don't want something I value so highly ruined for me through the careless use of a few words.
I am receiving emails supporting my thoughts - if anyone felt I was pointing fingers, I wasn't. If anyone is offended, that's just the way you chose to interpret my comments. There is no need to start another 'Brug forum debate'.
As a additional note, I am VERY offended, when people post on the brug forum (or any forum), that they have too many cuttings and unwanted plants, and they 'just tossed them in the trash' - that's shameful. If you have done so, there is no need to post it - it breaks peoples' hearts to read such statements. Most of the folks who ask for cuttings are just starting out, and just like most newbys, would love to have someone's 'trash' cuttings and plants.
I am saying 'bless you' to those willing to share a little of themselves.
Betty, I know what you mean about losing your collects due to illness. I broke my ankle last summer and couldn't get out to water my plants for 3 weeks. My family doesn't have the love or care for them I do, so they got hit with a lick and a promise. They didn't die, but they didn't really prosper because of the extreme heat that July and Aug. bring.
I too felt the comment about selfishness was harsh. I have found the opposite to be true here. It didn't convict me because I too am a newbie and have nothing to share at this time. I also know that there are those who supplement their incomes with selling brug cuttings at a much lower price than on e-bay or nursery catalog. I don't begrudge anyone trying to help ease the financial pinch is these trying times we live in.
If people are throwing away their cuttings and plants, so be it. I am not the brug police telling people what to do with their own possessions. I have to sit back and think that maybe their lives are so hectic right now there isn't time to cut, pack and post cuttings. There are dgers right now who have medical crises in their lives. Do I say,"don't throw that cutting away. I want it. You will have to find the time to send it to me"? No, that would be selfish on my part. I don't know what is going on is someone's life to make that judgement. Of course there are those that just throw them in their compost pile or trash. So what? There are plenty of other dgers who love to share. I'm not going to get my panties all bunched up over it as the saying goes.
Those of us who are newbies, myself included, have no right to expect anyone to give us anything. They are under no obligation to do so. I bought my first one and second ones. I was given several more and then bought three from a co-op. I am not expecting brug welfare. If someone blesses me with cuttings then I am ever so thankful and looking forward to doing the same some day. But no one had better call me selfish if I can't for whatever reason. If you want to start gardening, you better have the funds to do it. Kind of like having a pet. Don't get a dog if you can't afford to vet it.
I come to these forums to learn from others through their trial and error. I also come to to share with others what I have learned and to encourage and be encouraged. I don't come to hear others pass judgements on the motives of other. That should be left to dmail if you must. I am not in high school anymore and don't play those games.
Now can we get back to the subject of brugs?
loveisagypsy,
Violabird posted the only photos of 'Island Girl' on the PlantFiles in 2005. She might still have the Brug. She has a perfume and Brugs website:
http://www.jansscents.com/apps/webstore/
You might send her a D-mail and ask if she still has 'Island Girl'. She sells cuttings. It is rather late to get cuttiings going, but not impossible.
I purchased a rooted cutting from her. It arrived in great condition because it was still in its little pot.
You might check Daves marketplace , there are people selling cuttings on there .. I saw some from Maggi for 1.00 each and she sends big cuttings.
As for people throwing away plants, they are thiers to do with as they want. It takes alot of time to cut, wrap and ship cuttings..I shared before, cut ,wraped ,and packed and than drive 15 miles to town to mail. than I lost my brugs due to being ill and have started over this year. I have spend lots of money replacing my brugs. I have also received some cuttings from freinds both here and elsewhere.
Thanks Betty, my Island Girl only got 3' high and didn't bloom, so she was not a candidate for sharing this year.
Most of my brugs didn't do well or even bloom in our drought this year, and I'm sure you can find this all over my state unless you had perfect soil and unlimited water (which was restricted).
I'd also like to add that I BOUGHT my first cuttings of 'colored brugs' and yes, later I TRADED for a lot of mine. I just gave out over 15 lbs of cuttings, it was work and I doubt that I'll ever do it again like that. Whenever I got 'free cuttings' that were posted, I had always sent a bit extra for their time and generosity. Flowerjunkie also had $1.00 brugs listed in the classified, she didn't sell much--what is $1.00 for time and trouble??
JMHO
Hi Vi, I understand very well what a drought can do. The counties in this part of Texas are classified as being in extreme drought. Getting water for my plants hasn't been a problem because we have wells on the ranch, but it just isn't the same. Regardless of how much water the plants get, the surrounding areas not watered wick that water away leaving them plants thirsty. Together with the hot, hot summer and lack of humidity, my Brugs put out very little growth even though I fertilizer as usual.
My first, cherub pink, has y'd and has 7 buds of various sizes growing everyday. I hover over her like a mother hen. Is it too windy, are you dry, are you cold. Good grief. I guess I would just be happy at this point for my brugs to live. It is such a learning process. At least I've made it through the "rooting a cutting stage". Now just to keep them alive until April.
I got three very nice and healthy cuttings from Maggi's last co-op. They are just beginning to put out leaves.
We had a hot dry summer too. Maybe this one will be like the summer of 2007. We had rain and cool temps right up until July. But then we had a very short Fall.
I'd like to say that I know for a fact how generous the DG'rs are here, whether trading or paying for postage, I have nothing but good to say for what I have seen, learned, and recieved here... Island Girl sounds lovely.. let us hope she becomes profoundly available later this year! I know I will be sharing my bounty with everyone come this next fall!
It takes time and gas and money to grow, cut, pack and ship, and know who and what you are sending to them!
Thank goodness for everyone I have dealt with and been Blessed with knowing...Debra
Amen, Debra!
