I'm putting together my wildflower wish list and I wanted to know if anyone has had butterflies visit this flower (Mexican Hat). If it is not that attractive, I'll still get it but put it in another location.

IS this a good butterfly plant?
I think its a really neat looking flower and it is a great wildflower. Hope this helps.

We have a native Mexican Hat that literally grows everywhere but I have never seen a single butterfly on them. Although the blooms are pretty, to me they are a nuisance weed, stinky and worthless as far as butterflies go. The ones we get out in the fields look just like the first photo by Dave.
Maybe someone else has had better luck with other varieties...but will say again, the native species that grows wild out here is useless and invasive and doesn't smell inviting.

Well thanks Cat, that's the kind of info I was looking for!
I don't find it so much attractive as interesting Mrs_Ed. It attracts butterflys but they will dump it in a minute for echinacea. Many mix it with e. purpurpea here.
O that's wonderful! Have you considered knautia? Big fav with the bees and butterflys in my garden and blooms all summer. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1059/
I never HEARD of this plant. I LIKE IT!!
I just realized I did not put the asters on there!! Geeze, it just keeps getting more and more full~
I always start with a luvly plan and then........ the wheels fall off.....
HA! Looks like I'll need to do some staking of that knautia.
I have some other flowers around the garden that are attractive to BFs, but I won't be moving them into this garden.
Mrs_Ed I got rid of all the scabosia because it was tiresomely floppy but the knautia 'burgandy wine' doesn't flop for me (except when it's weighted down by bees). I dead head it way down the stalk though throughout the season.
oh, good to know! I am already SO ready for spring. But I just had hand surgery yesterday, so I guess it is okay that I have to wait!
