Diatomaceous Earth for Fire Ant Control

Houston, TX(Zone 9b)

Anyone use Diatomaceous Earth to control fire ants? Several websites state that it is a good means of getting rid of mounds.

didn't work for me.........

Found anything that does work? I have one corner of my flowerbed that I have been chasing ants around for the entire year. I am so tired of lifting up a plant or pulling a weed and having the dang things come charging out.....

the only thing i use (and i try to stay completely organic, but not with ants) is Spectracide Triazicide Once and Done. it used to be called something else. once and done is not year long protection; it's season long. i've tried all the gimmicks and always come back to this one. i sprinkle it around the perimeter of my garden and on any mound that may pop up in the garden, although that seldom happens. i've also used it directly in pots, lightly. it always does the trick.

most fireant control products are so expensive now. this one isn't touted as a FIREANT KILLER on the label per say, so it's the most affordable product too.

hope this helps. you don't have to use much, btw, just a light sprinkle over the mound. sometimes i water in, sometimes not......they still die........or move.......i'm afraid we're stuck with them no matter what.

We used spinosad last summer and it worked great. We got it at Lowe's... It's called Green Light with Conserve. Other stores have other brands, but this one worked very well for us.

marylyn, thanks for reminding me about spinosad. i've heard that is very good and just the other day at ace hardware, i was looking at the pest shelf and saw some kind of bagworm killer. i don't have those but i love to read labels. lo and behold, it was spinosad. i think a bottle that made 50 gallons was about 12 dollars.

marylyn...I will definitely check into it. Anything that will work. I am very live and let live, except with ants. They are not welcome in my yard!!!

We spray beneficial nematodes on our yard, especially on ant mounds and areas where we've seen them. After a few applications over a period of weeks, they're gone. However this past spring, we had such an infestation in our front flower bed under the leaves that we had to have our organic pest control company come and take care of them. I don't know what they used, but the ants are no more! LOL
