I did not dmail you, but am curious about sugarcane. Can this be grown in zone 5 perhaps as an annual if the plant is well taken care of? If so, where would you suggest I look for such a thing and instructions to care for it? Thanks for any ideas! :^)

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

tetley, you would have to ask someone in your zone. sugar cane needs HEAT and lots of it to reproduce in great number as far as i know. in miss. where my mama grew up they would save some of the stalks every year and bury them outside under a heavy mulch through the winter. then the next spring they would cut the joints and plant them for the next year's crop. i kept this plant in a pot and so it never got very big.

Hearing that you kept it in a pot encourages me to think that it can be done! I will have to research this and may grow some in the spring in a nice big pot. I already have a large banana overwintering in the boss's office. He was kind enough to say yes when I asked him if he wanted "a bit of the tropics" in his office. I am sure he was thinking smallish house plant until the 8 foot tall nanner appeared at his door. The look on his face was priceless! LOL

chantell, that's it as far as i know. now there may be 3 dozen varieties of purple sugar cane and mine might not be this one. however, it's close enough for government work to what i have.

Hi, I am really interested in this as I live smack dead center in the middle of 100 miles or so of sugarcane. I'm looking for a beautiful cane that is good for chewing & splitting to use as skewers. Here, they replant the whole cane longways on the row & new cane sprouts from the ends of each cane segment. I'd like to be able to use these, or a better kind if known, as a decorative yard border - then sell the cane @ farmer's market for the holidays...
