Rooster behavior (dance) - what does it mean?

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I have an RIR rooster who is quite sweet. Sometimes, when I am out in the yard, he comes over to me and hangs around my feet. If I go down onto my knee, he does this weird little dance around me. The wing that is furthest away from me he holds down almost to the ground, and then he does this little hopping thing around in a circle where I am kneeling, keeping the wing that is held down away from me.

What does that mean? Is he thinking that I'm his girlfriend, or is he trying to be threatening?

He has never tried to attack me or anything and I can pet his back. I'm just curious what's going on in his little tiny peanut size brain... ;-)

Courtship!! Perhaps hunkering down in a different way would not be misconstrued...

I had a pet chicken as a child. He was in love with my sister. Every time she would come out in the yard in her bikni to sunbathe, he would dance all around her blanket.

He's dancing to impress you.

Sorry Moxy!! I think perhaps something in the way you are moving is more submissive than is necessary with the creatures you are caring for...Maybe looking him in the eye when he tries it next will get it through that You and not He are the boss, however kind. G'luck Dear!

Moxon! It is not nice to tease the rooster.

Obviously your flannel and padded work clothes are exceptionally alluring. Do not lead him on--it will only lead to heartache for both of you. He will learn about Kelly eventually and think how you will feel when he abandons you for some lovely young pullet.

Oh BOY! Well now I'm embarrassed that I didn't know that! I always reach out to pet him and talk to him. Maybe I need to stop. But he's my hunky roo! This evening I think he MIGHT have grabbed ahold of the back of my pants when I was walking. I felt a tug. He was the only one following me. Mysterious...

I don't think its doing any harm. Just like when the girls squat when I come out near them. The only harm is that he'll be crushed if he realizes that Kelly is your beau not him. ;-)

Ohhh how much fun I had reading this thread!!!!
I have quite a mental image going on here!
Love is in the air!
So is that why the girls make that weird wing up squat when I go to pet them. They kinda put their shoulders up and kneel down. Curious...

Moxon, we had a rooster that would dance sideways toward me when he was happy to see me. Maybe that's what your's is doing? The 'happy dance'? Dewey would follow me around like a puppy dog. Even started following me around when I was driving the 4 wheel drive Mule. (poor guy was lonely) He's liv'n large with another DG member and now has a harem of hens.
