Cycling Redundancy Check

Paris, IL(Zone 6a)

I enjoy playing Civilization IV. I don't play online; just me against Artificial Intelligence. A couple months ago my game stopped loading while setting up to play. It kept showing a "... recovered from error..." dialogue box asking if I wanted to send to Microsoft. After sending a time or two and receiving a 'it's not our fault. It's your application' answer I decided to uninstall the game and reload it.

It won't reload. Somewhere along the line I get the Cycling Redundancy Check dialogue box. When I click OK the install shuts down.

Could this be tied to the Service Pack 3 I installed about the same time the game quit loading? Or is it more likely I've worn out the disk with many scratches too small to be seen with the naked eye?
