Orchid moss for rooting...

Emory, TX(Zone 8a)

I have been looking on the forum for the thread I saw that had info on rooting brugs in orchid moss. I can't find it, and the seaarch feature has been disabled. Can anyone tell me the details of how to do it? How much moss per cutting, how wet, etc.? I finally found some at Lowe's and would like to try it out.

Thanks,

Carol

LOL yes and still doing it...waiting for some of my brugs to quit blooming ..so I can take some cuttings...I also found that saving those disinfecting wipes that come in those white tall plastic containers makes nice handy containers to root those brug cuttings in..I will have to take some pic of mine in 1 of the containers..

I'm a first time "rooter" of brugs and when I read the initial post on using orchid moss I had to give that a try. Thanks to 2 wonderful DGers, I have some NOID pink & white brugs to root. The cuttings have been in the moss about 3 weeks. Almost all the white cuttings are showing leaves. The pink ones show no leaves, but have a lot of roots. Of course I know this since I had to pull one out of the moss to see what's going on. However, most of the pink ones are starting to dry out at the tips of the cuttings. Will they be OK? Maybe the pink just take longer to leaf out. In the picture, the one on the right is one of the white cuttings. All the others are pink. You can see where the tip is starting to dry out.

I just trim them off just above the green or woody part...with clean sterilized extra sharp scissors I have here for cutting only brugs stalks with..pair of good sewing scissors that I got on sale...LOL...

Here is a pic of the containes I was talking about for taller brug cuttings. If you are doing smaller cuttings, you can used plastic drinking cups, but some of my cuttings are over 3 feet tall and I cut those into 12 in lengths pieces.

I cut the top lip of the lid off so I can pull the cuttings straight out of my containers without them hanging up on that lip part of my container.

Container with the lip part cut off.. I like these because the bottom base of these containers are same size as top..no tipping over like those plastic cups with smaller bottoms.

Thanks, Nadine!
