I want to place a row of four containers with coleus along the stone path next to my deck (part shade.)
Has anyone taken pictures of their favorite coleus combinations?
This is Glory,Mahogany Giant and Greenolives.
Coleus combinations
What are the deep purple sword shapes leaves at the back of the first pic?
I love it with the jaggad edges of the other coleus.
All combos are great.
I will keep the containers on the deck side of the bluestone. The other side of the walk is planted with lilies, platycodon dwarf, dwarf astilbe, poppies and in early spring ,allium Karavatans, corydilis, epimedium, small hostas Nana,Dragons tears.
That's Strobilanthes: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=Persian+Shield&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&searcher%5Bgrex%5D=&search_prefs%5Bblank_cultivar%5D=&search_prefs%5Bsort_by%5D=rating&images_prefs=both&Search=Search and it's also known as Persian Shield as a common name. It goes well with any of the coleus that incorporate purple.
Very nice, Pirl! Is that phormium in the second?
Cordyline, Victor. I did plant a Phormium that year but it didn't survive.
Thanks - looks quite similar. Love it with the purple veins of the bright coleus. Contrast in height and form is very nice.
Thanks everybody, a great collection so far.
I also like large and small leaves combined.
love the kongs, is that the variety?
where did you gat them?
bad news is I grew them from seed.... I have seen them at home depot.. but late in the season

I found your Kong varieties on Big Dipper Farm.
As you can guess I am getting my coleus's listed for early orders.
I have 12 large planters ,it iakes a long time.
Very nice, Allison!
Rosy Dawn will have their 2009 selections available Dec. 1st. You can add to the order up until a week before shipping time.

That looks great Pirl.
Yes I have a few favs, not much room in my area for cuttings and as far as I know Pirl, you are the "winter-over" cuttings queen.
I saved "Watermelon" and "Glory"
I will be able to get a few cuttings from these by May.
Here is how nuts I am
The Rosydawn catalogue is online Dec 1
I also looked at Gebheardts , after wandering around confuzed I created a spread sheet(took two hours)
Looks like thirty new plants, that doesnt count multiples.
Good thing I have saved $ anticipating an expensive spring.
I will look at new coleus when the catalogues come out.
This is Watermelon and Glory in their spot.
we cross posted tee hee.
You can take cuttings of those two right now. Just take a 3 to 4" cutting of each and they should root fast in any soil-less mix. Don't baby them - a little drink is just fine (for me, too!). They're best kept in an eastern exposure or back from a southern window (the worst exposure of all per my radio gardening pro).
These are just a few of the cuttings I took in October.
OHHHH Pirl, I cant imagine how you keep track of everything.
I will do as you say because the plants are now in a south window. I only have south, north and west.
They just get more bug problems when they're close to the south windows. Try some in a west window and see how they do. Mine love it. I'll be putting some in a northeast window later this week just to brighten up the kitchen with some color since winter is setting in much too fast.
As I recall you were taking some 500 cuttings, maybe more.
Do they all go in the kitchen window?
The image boggles my mind.
I envision you in one of those huge estates on the hudson river with a cellar kitchen with windownsills 3 feet deep.
Can I put my order in with you, Pirl?!
LOL Victor
Gebhardts doesn't say when their 09 online cat. will be ready.
Any one know?

...and finally they go to the porch (most of them) for the winter. I'll take photos of them there tomorrow since we'll have a beautiful 48 degree day today and I'll be outside doing all I can before the cold weather returns.
I don't know about Gebhardts but Glasshouse Works isn't showing their 2009 plants yet.
Are your cuttings in water?
No. I may have them in water for a day or two while I pot them up but my radio guy, Ralph, says they'll develop "water roots" and not adapt to soil as easily so I follow his advice and plant them in soil-less mix, such as Pro Mix, though this time I used Miracle Gro.
Coleus Forum also advises rooting in soil.
