Webcam questions

My husband are pretty much novices on the computer, are thinking of Christmas gift webcams for our two children that live far from us, and then the three different families using Skype. I've looked at webcams but there are so many I'm terribly confused. Please advise us if you are using these options. Looking forward to hearing from you....also does one normally fit three different makes of cpu's? two have Windows XP, one has Vista???? Thank you....Deb
