Has anyone got buff rocks? In the Murray McMurray catalog it says they are great setters in late spring and great layers in winter.Wanted first hand information on that.Especially the late spring setting, does that mean they only set in the late spring? Thanks Donna
has anyone got buff rocks?
Green 04735: I do have three buff rocks. What Murray is refering to is that mating season generally doesn't take place during the winter months. Therefore the Buff rocks are good layers all winter long, but also become great setter during the mating season so If you allowed them to mate they will set and hatch their own eggs. They are very similiar to cochins in many ways. Hope I have helped you some . Good luck Haystack.
Yes you have,I`m new at this.I have the sexlinks and they are still mating as of yesterday and its pretty cold here.Maybe that will be the last day as of this morning there was snow on the ground and they will not come out of there coop, scared I guess of the unfirmilar.Donna
Hi again green: Your going to surely enjoy the differences of the various chickens, first thing you know you'll be an old pro. It's so funny when it comes to chickens, The spring is known as mating time. Yet there are always those who will mate at any time. I'm not sure if thats just a way to stay warm, or to make a liar out of someone. Anyway as for the snow, again I remember when my first chicks saw the snow it was like the plague, after a short time they were out in it and eating it like little children. Guess we all face the unknown with a certain amount of fear and intrepidation. How cold is it now in your part of the country? I always throughly enjoy hearing about others experiences with our feathered friends, hope you'll post often and keep us abreast of whats going on. Always Haystack.
OOooOOOooOOOO - I love that one that's front and second from the left. It looks like its black with a golden chest. gorgeous!
Wow Great pictures: Oddly enough I recently ordered twenty-five Red Star sex-links from Murray Hatch also. I hve never had the sex-links before and had only seen pic's of them so it was great to get to see them up close. Thanks for sharing your birds. I was wondering if you could tell me what size eggs they lay? I also ordered two Redstar roos, and five auracanas. they are supposed to arrive early Feb. ninth. Brrrrrrrrrrr. That wind sounds cold. I know that is beautiful country your in but it sounds too cold for me. Yes I truly am a big baby.. Have a great day. Haystack.
My Red stars lay huge eggs. HUGE. One of them laid a 3.2 ounce egg a couple of weeks ago. It was so big I had to weigh it, just to see.
Holy chook that's huge! It'd never dawned on me to weigh the eggs. So I just ran out to my kitchen and weighed a bunch of the eggs. Lacey's are around 1 1/2 oz, Talula's 1 1/2 (with the exception of her 'big' one the other day that was 2 1/4), and Anya's are all around 2 - 2 1/2 oz.
So again, lemme repeat -- that's a BIG EGG!!!!
Holy Chicken egg Batman: Moxon U simply crack me up. Can't tell you how many times I have thought, how great it would be to meet the persons behind these Posts and comments. It'll never happen but would not that just be a rip. I always feel so fortunate to see the kindness of persons, not only towards one another but also toward the great animal friends the Lord has blessed us with. It's now 3:30 a.m . here, I could not sleep, but thanks to all of you on this forum I have had great company all morning. Thanks and have a wonderful day. Haystack
It never dawned on me to weigh eggs until I saw the size of hers! She did lay a 2.8 ounce egg also - that was the first one I weighed and I blogged about it, and then about a week later the even bigger one appeared!
I think it would be fun to meet everyone too Haystack, but we're all so far apart. We had our first "poultry roundup" in the fall and I met "KNSLWilliams" and her family and it was loads of fun. We are planning another in the spring and I think more will be attending. With so many of you on the west coast, maybe you could have one there and all send us pictures! Hope you got some sleep after all...
Yes Claire, Shelia and Keith were fun to be around. I am looking forward to going back in June. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I get to see them before June.
The golden comets or red sexlinks lay big brown eggs, the black ones are a darker brown, the third egg the red ones layed were double yokers I was so surprised to have that when they were so young, they were only five months old when that happend. The black one with the gold chest is my granddaughters favorite she nameed her beauty, all of them are so friendly, even the rooster. He is really big now and he really watches over his ladies when I let them out of the pen to forage.I would definitely order red sexlinks again for there egg laying,I got 8 eggs today out of 9 pullets and its really cold out and has been for awhile so I guess I will get eggs all winter.I so have a light that comes on at 3 in the morning to deep them warm and thaw out the water. And they are that big so they don`t eat a lot of food.
Hi Green: Where did you get your Golden Comets? I have been looking in Chicken books but can find no refrence to them. Do you know if there is another name for them? I'm always interested in new breeds and any info on them. Happy Thanksgiving. Haystack.
They are allso called red star, red sexlinks or golden comets. They are very quiet and friendly and cold hardy.
Im thinking about getting some buff rocks from McMurray....Ive had no luck in finding eggs. What kind of quality did you get from them? I wonder about getting some red stars/golden comets too; everyone says what wonderful layers they are.
Hi citra in SUNNY Fla: I ordered from Murray last year what they call a rainbow collection, (eight varieties) and they arrived in great condition. I also have put in an order from Murray for the ninth of feb. This is my order for red star and aracaunas. So far Murray has been great to deal with. No complaints what so ever at least yet. They are a little higher priced than some but great service. Haystack.
How is your weather up there in WA. It was pretty cold here this morning, the wind is blowing like mad.
Ive ordered from McMurray several times and was very pleased with the service. I was just wondering what the quality was that I could expect. I may just get buff orpingtons, tho Id like to stick with the plymouth rocks, since thats what I have. Buff o's are great layers, tho.
I've never ordered from McMurray before but I have decided to this year. I ordered 25 brown layer mixed pullets and 25 ornamental layer mixed pullets. I'll see what I think in February when they arrive! They are coming late February. I'm hoping to get some new breeds in the mix!
Claire
You've already ordered!! Oh geez, I hate to think someone got the jump on me....what to do, what to do....(wringing hands.....)
lol, IF I order it will be for specific breeds I want. I wont do the variety again.
But I think I have what my goal was in the beginning, Eggs layers and good meat birds. Yes I will eat them. Gotta do something with the way the economy is going.
Fla_Chick - not to worry, mine aren't coming until last week of Feb. You could get yours for earlier in Feb and have me beat! LOL!
Sexlinks? I am tripping on the name... but they are nice lookin' chick'ins. Going a Googlin yet again.
O wow. THAT is really interesting.
