Too Big For His Britches!

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

This Is My Amorphophallus Titanum(My Child/Baby). He has officially outgrown his greenhouse!! But I couldn't be happier after all I get to look at it all winter long!! He is beautiful if I do say so myself!! Last time I planted it the tuber weighed over 4lbs! I wonder how big it will be when he goes dormant whenever that will be. Needless to say I am looking for a bigger greenhouse! Hooray!!

Congratulations! Wow, 4 lbs. I'd be too giddy to plant it. lol
That is one beautiful plant. Good luck on the greenhouse. I'd love to have a titanum. One day...

Lucky you! And what an interesting petiole it has- more spots and splashes than other titans I've seen.

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

Thanks, I'm so proud! I noticed it has kind of a different looking Petiole, it has some sort of streaking that I've never seen on other titanums?

Very odd I have also never seen this streaking on the petiole of titanums either. Hope it grows well, possibly a new cultivar much like Konjacs different petiole forms.

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

I sure hope it is a new cultivar, I've never seen any other one like it

The closest I've ever seen is the amorphophallus bulbifer racing stripes...

I would make sure it has no virus mosaic type virus on the leaves then I would see if it keeps producing this type of pattern each year. The next thing would be to see if it is passed on to offspring. The seeds may carry this unique look but they could be considered genetically different what you would need is to propagate it and see if the pattern stays.
Their are a few problems here one is that titanum rarely produce suckers the next is that it usually only interest the crazed collectors like our selfs. TCing it would be the only real way to introduce it as a new cultivar of titanum.
If this is something your interested in let me know I maybe able to help I would not mind to help introducing it, but in order for me to get it TCed I would have to produce at least 500 plants. I can give you more information if interested.

Y'all can put me on the list as a customer. I would definitely exchange an iris bed for a greenhouse- build it and they will stink. lol
BTW, hello Brian.

Hey hope all is well. Looks like we will be getting some cold weather this week. Take care.

Things are just peachy except for the cold weather. I'm not too frond of it. lol I know, that was bad. hehehe

Your amorph is great.
I have a titanum that is about four years old. It goes dormant when it wants to and I always hope I am doing the right thing about taking care of it. What do you recommend doing when the plant is dormant? With the bulb I mean.

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

Thanks...When mine go dormant, I change my potting soil and plant it right back in the pot and just keep it barely and I mean BARELY!! moist almost dry. I don't take the hose to it till it starts spiking in which I gradually start watering and feeding it more and more. You always have to store A. Titanums in some sort of medium(peat, potting soil, etc)

It is march 8th and my titanum is still just sitting there. It has had this leaf now for over a year. Has not gone dormant. Some days it looks like the leaves are starting to wilt but it keps perking up and surprising me. I just keep it watered and fertilized a bit and will stop watering when the leaves start to yellow.

Keep me informed on how yours are doing. I like to hear about other bulbs and their growing habits.
