Hi, just wondering if anyone knows if the Begonia Thurstonii can successfully be propagated by leaf? I know you can root most any leaf, but not all will produce a new plant. Thanks to any and all who help me on this!
B.Thurstonii
I think this is best done by stem cuttings. Being a shrub the rule is usually it won't grow from a leaf but rules are meant to be broken. Let us know if you can grow it from a leaf.
Hi, thanks, I have several already rooted, so we will see. I will let everyone know. Thanks!
Some of the experts say if it does throw up some pups then it probably has some rhizomatous parentage. I have a leaf of 'Panasoffkee' rooted and I am keeping an eye on it to see if pups. I wonder where trailers fit into the grand scheme of things.
Hmm, good question. Let me know on your leaf the outcome. Also the Luxurians Stewart, I have several leaves rooted, does that one root? As I have heard the Luxurians can be rooted by leaf as well as stem cuttings. I am still on the prowl for the other Luxurians so if you find one....I will pay top dollar for it..I know they are hard to find, and after I spoke with you a classmate came by and informed me that the one greenhouse we spoke about (not naming names) is extremely slow and hard to order from.....so I have enough word of mouth to avoid that purchase...though is painful to see it offered and not just grab it for the measly $6.50 being asked for it...perhaps also it one of those tiny plants that will only live for a day and give up.
I have to say that in reference to the price. For something so highly sought after and hard to find, that is dirt cheap! So anyway, if you see one elsewhere, do give me the heads up! How are your begonias you bought from me? I am putting them on sale this week as they are crowding me out of the greenhouse! I need more room to experiment with other things this winter.
I read somewhere that 'Paul Hernandez' will root from leaf but not grow a plant and it has luxurians as one of the parents so that kind of shoots the idea of being like the parent in some respects. So I rooted one by stem cutting for a friend. I heard carolineifolia will root by leaf too but I didn't have any luck with it so I just do little offsets which is so easy. Same for Mrs. Ludwig.
As for buying from a place with a reputation of being slow and getting things wrong, sometimes you just have to take a gamble. I bought a seemingly rare begonia from one of the very slow sources because I couldn't find it anywhere else. It finally arrived after 3 months or so.
I have had two luxurians and find them difficult to get through the winter. So I will put that one on my plate for much, much later. I really don't care for the ones that get over 6 foot tall - they look so gangly.
The begonia I got from you is doing just fine. I just hope it does okay for the long winter.
