I just got word that someone hacked into my ebay account and was selling in my name. All is changed there now...but....
If anyone has seen evidence of this, please let me know and I will explain it to the injured party... I saw on CMB's forum that someone received a H. zatifolia from me... of course, it is H. latifolia...but that could have been done thru the hacking....
Just a head's up.

OT - someone hacked my ebay
Wow Carol---the same thing happened to me once and it's pretty scary...someone was using my name and identity to sell I think it was high power hunting rifle scopes (!) on ebay....luckily the buyer was curious enough about the low price (which was still hundreds of $'s) that he actually called me up at work and asked if I was, indeed, selling scopes....I contacted ebay and they stepped in immediately and dealt with it; I don't think anybody lost any money, which was great....but it definitely is a risk to either buy or sell extensively on ebay....seems to draw the hackers like moths to a candle (or ants to a hoya bloom:))....anyhow, everyone be careful out there in cyberspace...

Sorry Carol, my ebay account was once hacked, but they bought almost $700.00 dollars worth of stuff. I was able to get my money back but took me a lot of calls and affidavits, had to cancel my card but paypal did not want to give the information as of of what was purchased or by whom =(.
Wow! I guess I am still a bit naive about things like that. I don't buy or sell on e-bay ... but it sure is scary that folks are doing such a thing.
One of our major credit cards has been compromised three times this year! We've had to have Citibank cancel our card three times and transfer the balance and issue new account numbers and new cards each time! The first two charges were small in amount @$50 each time for a satellite t.v company. Then we got a statement a few months later with a charge for over $700 for tickets to a show in Vegas or Reno for some comic we've never even heard of! Whoever that was must have been buying tickets for all their friends and family! And, again two weeks ago another charge of $540 for the same satellite t.v. company again! When it happened the first time my husband contacted Citibank first and then talked to the fraud department at the satellite t.v. place telling them we have cable and don't have anything to do with satellite t.v. I sure hope the fraud divisions can catch these folks and put them in jail! Makes me so mad!
The problem is that they thieves are coming with newer technology everyday, so it's very hard for the banks to catch up. My debit card has been replaced two times this year because of fraud. I was reading on the internet that there is this devise, that when you use a debit/credit card at any place, someone can be standing close to you, and with the gadget in the pocket as stealing all the card information. So now I'm back to write checks when I go shopping.
Interesting. We had heard about never letting your credit card leave your sight. Used to use our card when eating out but heard of some wait staff having some sort of machine where they took your card to the register to prepare your check and would scan your card with something that they could hide easily ... got all your information.
I have been seriously thinking of going back to check writing ... Arrrgh! Hate that thought!
When I got a funny email, I sent it to spoof@ebay.com. They assured me it was a 'phish'. they then told me I had been hacked into...some emails and I am right again!!! Actually corresponded with an ebay person...but it was tedious!!!

What a bummer! I don't know if this helps with credit cards or not, but I pay 11.00 a month for protection with CitiCards.......even though I don't use that card. If anyone inquires into my credit, WHAM BAM........on the same day the credit card company will notify me by email and telephone...............it makes me feel easier................
Thankfully, Ebay and Paypal are separate (but equal...). No one did me bad $wise...but could have made a mess for me with ebay and good standing. Really a hassle to straighten it all out...especially since I NEVER reply to anyone asking for information on line!!!
Live and learn!!

Gail, I don't think anyone has inquired about our credit ... it's someone who somehow has gotten our credit card number and is using it to charge stuff! The credit card company has in the past been great about calling us if any unusually large sums are being put on the card. Years ago my husband took a bunch of students up to the Atlanta Airport to tour one of the airline's facilities and then to the Air Force Base and another Business Jet Co. He charged all the hotel fees on our card for the two days they were gone and the students reimbursed him for their share. I got a phone call asking if we knew someone was charging a dozen hotel rooms to our account! I had to laugh and explained yes, it was my husband but we sure appreciated them calling. They called another time about a large amount being put on the card but it was also legitimate. I'm thinking it must be they only call if it's over a certain dollar amount because they never called us regarding the almost $800 fee for tickets to the comedian's show!
I think this is maybe if someone is applying for a car loan, turning on utilities in my name, etc............then credit is checked............then I am alerted.................
When I was in Mexico about 6 months ago buying medicine............the charge was denied........when I got back home, I called the credit card company and was furious that I had write a check. They told me that when I went to a foreign country and intended to spend large amounts of money to notify them ahead of time and they would never decline my card. I learned that lesson.
Lin ~ we too got nailed this summer. First charge was $5 to a campaign fund of a candidate we would never support. Second was $1,269 to a European travel agency. I caught it as I access my credit cards regularily. I reported it, account closed, balances transfered and they are still trying to track it down. It is major aggravation. I choose to monitor my own credit and not pay someone else for that service.
I am not detail oriented and hate book work..............
Pod, it is smart to keep track and monitor your credit closely nowadays with all the scam artists/thieves out there! I am bad, never check but my DH does check our accounts all the time, thank goodness! He pulls them up on the computer every other day just to make sure there aren't any unusual or odd charges. This world is getting scarier and scarier with all the dishonesty.
I got my ebay account hacked into and they tried to sell Tiffany Watches or something random on my account. Luckily they sent me an email notifying me of this and I managed to sort it all out very quickly, no problems. Was very scary.
Recently someone stole my handbag and from that they got my account no, date of birth and address and they managed to take some mobile phones out in my name - I spent a lot of time calling fraud departments about that one! They did sort it out, but it was extra scary on top of having my handbag stolen in the first place. If I'd known, I would have cancelled the random "direct debits" that turned up on my statement...
Scary stuff. Keep safe, everyone.
