Whooo hoo! That page was getting long!
Great Butterflies everyone, keep 'em coming!!
Here is a Blue Morpho from the Butterfly exhibit Sheila, Paige, Peggy, and I worked at earlier this year. I loved how the light came through in this pic. It shows just how thin the wings are...
Daily Butterflies Page 54
Oh Kell, I love seeing those different butterflies!
Nice shots everyone!
I had two very unannounced GSTs emerge this week. It was getting colder and I was concerned that they couldn't fly, but all was well in the end.
The first took off as soon as the cage was opened in the sun. I think it had emerged the day before. It landed on an oak that is near our deck and DH got some great photos of it and the fall leaves too.
Sure enough..it eclosed later that day. I wanted it to be able to nectar before night fall so I removed it and placed it on a mist flower; but not before pics of course. It was still there early the next morning, but gone by noon when the sun warmed it up.
These GSTs would normally wait until march to emerge, but our crazy weather has the plants fooled too. My daffs are popping up everywhere, no blooms yet but if we don't quit with the rollercoaster temps who knows.

Kelli.....Just noticed the NEW bf to our thread!!! Your Calif Green Hairstreak is a great capture. I noticed you added it to bugfiles too; that is great!
Oh the Green HS is gorgeous Kelli!
Sheila, Isn't that crazy how some of the STs have decided to emerge not waiting for Spring. My BST last week and now your GSTs. What great shots you and Herman caught! Just lovely!! Great fall colors in the first pic, and the one in your hand is so clear!!!
Thx Mola! The Blue Morphos were quite a spectacle at the exhibit. I took a vid of over 1 minute of this scene with several fluttering in and out of the frame trying to cluster together on one couple mating. Lots of blue!
Oh and nice shots Kim! The Gulf Frits are still eclosing here too. I have one of several in a cage in the mudroom that eclosed late yesterday, but it was getting close to freezing so I figured I'd wait until it warms up today to release it.
Super shot of the West Coast Lady Kelli! Great to see the butterflies from out your way. Thank you!
:-S
I did look but didn't take time to see who had taken them. I need to go back and take time to do that. All the pics were so great, bet the calendar will be super this year.
Oh and we are suppose to get the opportunity to vote for what month they are put on too.
All bf photos are simply gorgeous. Guess it's going to be TX, Fla, and VI bf's through the winter. Hoorah for the south.
Sheila, congrats on your eclosures!
Martha
That's one great shot! Mrs Ed. I'm so happy to see b.f. South of here. 'Cause it's getting cold(er) here.
Hi all!!
Is there a place with "butterfly terms"? Like eclosing? I went to the insectipedia, but that just gives bug names.
Any help for this newbie is appreciated...;-)

There's some in the sticky, MJ

Thank You!! That answers a lot of questions.
Wow! Once again this thread is full of lovely photos! I hope I have more of my own pics in the future, but here are a few of the Monarch Butterfly Grove in Pacific Grove, CA from a couple of days ago. It's really hard to get photos since they are up so high, and it was a warm day so they were flying mostly all over the place...very neat!

sunnyg, that must be such a thrill!
And about the contest, a huge Hooray for Elphaba, #1!! and to cat, too, TexasPuddyPrint, runner up. Amazing photos!
After I looked at insects, I decided to look at bulbs and corms, but there weren't any, just the flowers. not the 'roots'! haha, I wanted to see a gorgeous tulip bulb!!
OK, I'm off to look at the rest of the winners----
I voted for that pic MrsEd!! I love the GSTs.
Sunny that would be a thrill in my book; even at the heights they are.
This is some crazy weather we're having here, too. Floridians get so silly when it's cold. I've had several more Polydamas eclose this week, along with another Zebra Swallowtail. I'm still feeding one of each of the following cats: Palamedes, Polydamas, Zebra ST, and Spicebush. Yesterday, I found about six Gulf Frit cats on the passiflora caerulea so it's still active here.
Dad came back from hunting in Perry, FL this week. He didn't shoot anything but his friend got a hog. Dad says he enjoys just getting away from work and sitting in the tree stand watching nature. He took a picture of this Gulf Frit so I suppose I can call him a butterfly hunter.
Melanie
I remember that story, but not that photo so it's new to me! Very nice picture that illustrates how the wings are floppy when they're still wet.
I remember the pic and story but forgot it was you that had it happen. It was a great find.
Melanie....at least you trained him well!
Today...I saw one Painted Lady drop like a rock from a tree and nectar on zinnias. No fluttering from flower to flower today. It was in the low 30s last night and will do it again tonight.
Melani, my father and his buddies made a Big Safari to hunt boar in Arkansas, I think it was. One guy got chased up a tree and his hog kept him up there all day! Every time he tried to climb down, the boar would rush out of the bushes at him, and back up the tree he'd scramble. haha. Daddy brought home this awful, 800 pound ugly monster. Poor Mama cooked the first piece of the beast, and it was SO gamey that no one could handle a second bite. I don't know what they did with the rest of all that meat. Gone.
Enough to make one a vegetarian!
MrsEd, I got started voting, and would have done it on a fast computer. Hundreds of photos at 20-30 second download each?? Whew! Your's was a beautiful image, I don't know how you-all do it!
Molamola, yah, lots of entries and excellent ones too. Oh on dialup it would have been horrendous.
I didn't think it was bad this year...the option with thumbnails was good, then I just looked at the whole photo with all of them that interested me in any way. I liked it a lot better than the way it was last year. I still wish we had more categories, actually, since some of those categories have so many entries. I was wishing I could vote for more than 3 in each, because there were a lot that were so good...I would have voted for at least a dozen if I could. So many excellent photos!
Loved all the pics everyone who entered pics and won!!! I voted in all catagories. It was a tough one!
Wowsers on the Blue Metal Mark Cat!!
Loved the Coleus Mrs Ed!
Loved the blue flowers Kim!
Lovely pics Sunnyg
Anyone I didn't mention, I surely appreciated your fine work! We will have a beautiful calender for 2009!!
I didn't enter any this year... Had too much going on.
HEARTFELT CONGRATS TO ALL WINNERS AND RUNNERS UP!
Wild hogs and such are eaten quite a bit in Texas. There's so many of them....wish the hunters and trappers could kill a lot more because they are so destructive and reproduce faster than rabbits! But I wouldn't know what to do with one as far as cooking it. They must need to be cooked in certain ways...some of the neighbors cook them...not too bad, but I like venison better. Not much stirring outside because of the cold. Only down to the 40's last night, but then it doesn't warm up enough during the daytime. Yesterday we mostly had sulfurs and GF's flying. Today I don't see anything much yet.
