Found two new hoyas....please help ID

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I saw these fabulous looking hoyas in baskets at my favorite nursery where they are fabulous propagators but they don't have any names on anything. Thanks
I am going to post a general picture and then a close up of the leaves.

Gail, what a find! That Hoya has beautiful foliage. I hope someone can give you a tentative ID from those leaves but you might have to wait until you get blooms. Check out some of these leaves ... some look so similar in shape, length, size etc: http://www.myhoyas.com/hoya%20album%20M.htm

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Here is a closeup view of the leaves and look how dark green they are.............
Thanks for help on these.........I am really wanting to keep learning the names........I can even remember the names so far of what you have told me.........

Gail, is that last photo the same plant or a different one? Amazing! I need to come to visit you and get you to take me to that nursery! Wow!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks Lin.....................I am going to bookmark that site...........thank so much......I just walked in the house from being out of town for 3 days.........have to start watering indoor plants and then will come back and research some...........again , you are always so helpful.................aren't they beauties!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

That last picture is a closeup of the 3rd pictures leaves..................

The second picture is a closeup of number 1 picture.............

Gail, Yes indeed Hoya's are beautiful! I love the looks of the foliage on that new plant of yours, even without blooms! The blooms will just be a huge bonus and even more so if they happen to be fragrant!

(Zone 1)

So, are they two different plants? That last photo looks like larger leaves.

Whitestone, NY(Zone 7a)

Nice buys! That first one looks like it has long large leaves, and reminds me of H. meliflua ssp. fraterna. Not sure though.

Congrats on those finds!

Gabi

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks, Gabi................I will have to write that down...........we will see if we get some confirmations of your guess.........I very much appreciate your effort..............the leaves are very long and large on the first one.

The second one you can tell the leaves are more of a oblong ?? look.

Trelleborg, Sweden

The second hoya looks a lot like that Hoya-relative with white flowers that I have absolutely no idea of the English name for... Here's a link to a photo from a Swedish gardening site: http://www.odla.nu/artiklar2/bilder/stephanotis_floribunda.jpg

In latin it's called stephanotis floribunda.

I know what a stephanotis florabunda is and this is not that.........at all........thanks for trying........I have that plant......and she does bloom fragrant white flowers.

If I do have two jasmine, I might cry! (LOL)

Gail, compare your first plant's leaves with those in Mike's Vinyl-covered aluminum clothes line wire Hoops for Hoyas thread. I posted a pic of my meliflua ssp fraterna and it looks just like yours.. no venation visible. I think Gabi is right. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=893575
I'll second Lin's wish to come out and shop at the nursery where you find these! ;)

Guess what, My Hoya.......I just called the father of the girl who propagates everything and asked him if (I got two of the baskets...........just showing one......the second one) they had jasmine (the stephanotis floribunda in baskets right now).........the answer was YES! You are right.............I guess I am still excited because they are wonderful plants and these are particularly healthy..............

Thanks so much.............you really know your plants!!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

That is exactly what it looks like.............love you all for being so nice! Now I know I have one awesome hoya.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am going to propagate like crazy this winter so I have hoyas to trade..............I have already rooted in 4" pots the hoya australis that blooms white all the time...........getting excited. I can't bring it in the house as it is too fragrant.

***I did notice that the grower at this nursery adds other hoyas to each basket usually..........

Wow, I have never seen Stephanotis growing in a hanging basket! How cool, I guess you could prune it to shape and keep it from getting way out of bounds?

I spent an hour and a half last week unwinding my Stephanotis from two upside tomato cages. One was upside down with the prongs in the soil, then another wired to it to form a pyramid but the plant was getting so top heavy the top tomato cage was getting wobbly. I want to find a sturdier trellis and repot it.

I love the looks of it growing on the hoop! Googling around I found these at Logees: http://www.logees.com/searchprods.asp

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I went to that site but didn't see any hoops................

(Zone 1)

I'm not sure why it's not linking to the page. Let me try again: http://www.logees.com/searchprods.asp Nope ... taking me to a blank page. If you go to that page and type in Stephanotis in the white box top right and click go, you should see three Stephanotis, click on each photo to enlarge. The top and bottom pic's show them trained on a hoop. Center one is just a close up of blooms.

Beautiful plants, Gail, and a great find! I spy some other beauties in the first picture next to the window with really colorful foliage. What are they?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I have two kinds of caricature plants, Cicada.........that is what you are looking at or you may see a Ti plant in the center of syngonium plants (ages old)

Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Gail,

I want to join the trip to the grower that you're organizing. What great plants!

One sure way you could tell if the plant is or isn't Stephanotis is to check the surface of the leaf. the H. m. ssp. f. has a very smooth very shiney kinda thick leaf and the Steph is not. They are similar in shape.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

These two plants have very different leaves............darn it! I really think I have a jasmine...........(I bought two of them ) (lol)

Cape Coral, FL(Zone 10a)

Gessiegail, great finds!!! one looks just like my meliflua fraterna. I don't know about the other one. Your australis is putting on a nice show!!!

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

Is H. meliflua ssp. Fraterna the one often sold as 'Hoya Fraterna'?
It does look like one I bought with that ID a few years back.

Hey Gail...if you should ever want to 'unload' an extra Stephanotis....my arms are wide open;) LOL!!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

are you serious, Nan! I will gladly ship her to you as I bought two of them thinking I am would use one to propagate (LOL)

I know you are in a cold zone......but I have those 72 hour heat packs.........so can you wait until after Thanksgiving because company starts coming in this Saturday through the next group coming on Friday after Thanksgiving....................

Very good!

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

omigosh...I was kidding but I surely wouldn't turn it down!
I'd truly love to have it!
I'll send you the postage needed.
Gail, you're so awesome...has anyone hugged you yet today? (Ü)
(((((( ))))))

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

OH...I thought we were talking about one plant...yes, the 2nd photo looks like Stephanotis: LOTS of light and warmth, likes to climb UP...loves to be fed!!!

Yes...alot of people sell it as H. fraterna...H. fraterna has very thin leaves, like H. coriacea.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Nan............I bought two of them.........so you are welcome..............I have already put it in my 'manage folders' so I don't forget...............

thanks for telling us it likes to be fed a lot........Carol!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Hey Nan............why do I act like my name is Molly Megabucks? I do it because I love people I think. Anyway, I paid 17.00 for that hanging basket. How about cuttings galore from her???????? I am being an Indian Giver because if I have her I will propagate her too for spring.

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

You do love people and you're always so quick to share!
I'd have paid you for the plant, too, (even though my dingbat response didn't indicate that!) but I certainly understand, and you know I'd be very grateful to have cuttings!
I'm going to send you a d-mail.....maybe not 'til tomorrow though...gotta work tonight!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

You are welcome to pay for the plant or have freebie cuttings.............whatever you want to do, Nan! You do the same thing with people (lol)
