i just planted 100+ bulbs in my already "well-bulbed" (?) property. is there a program to keep me from ordering sooooo many bulbs? some sort of 12 step thing????
it happens every year. a catalog or email arrives with a GREAT SALE and a friend ask "do you want to order bulbs? look at these great prices!!"
"of course!!!" i reply arrrgghh
help!!!
(lol)
bulb help
We have a few customers that are on our "Please ignore me when I order bulbs" list. We confirm the request with "You have asked us to ignore your order and thus we do".
garden I have the same problem. There is no help available.
Wow garden - some of us, like me, wish we had the fortitude to limit outselves to 100 bulbs! We bought a new house in 2006 - planted 450 bulbs first year, an additional 1500 second year, and another 1300 this fall. It gets worse, trust me!! And that doesn't include the perennials.
^_^
LOL Patti I feel quite healthy all of a sudden - hehehe - check yourself into a hospital now!!!
Steve. Hospital? Can't, got to start planting. I had intended to start the planting today, but got sidelined by another garden project. We bought a holly this week that was too big for us to plant ourselves, so we had a crew bring it in with a bobcat. The old dead pine had to be cut down and all the debris moved before the new Ilex 'Nellie Stevens' could go in the ground, so my day got eaten up with that. The two guys doing the planting thought I was a bit off when I said that the new tree couldn't be planted what looked like just a random patch of lawn as there were Narcissus there. Got to save me bulbs! So the tree got planted so it would look good with the Narcissus. Patti
bleek...that's funny! I have a friend who got banned from QVC. She would order and return.
Just got 100 of your hyacinths in the ground today. Nice plump bulbs. Only grew a dozen last year and was impressed . . . soooo....couldn't not try a bed of them.
The bed they are in I use for impatiens. Should I just leave the bulbs in and see if they come back?
Patti I feel so much better now :o) I love your new tree
Well after swearing I would not order another bulb I got 101 more bulbs in the mail and no place ready for planting. It is a sickness I tell you.

The Sale at Brent and Becky's at 50% off has started earlier this year. How could I not order a few of the one's I craved, but thought extravagant. Narcissus Colblanc, Mite (mighty pricey),Gay kybo, and a mess more. Patti

Well I would have placed an order except my shipping charge is almost the same as the order amount. I am bummed they have 2 bulbs I really want but not worth the saving becasue of the shipping charges.
Ok I got around it and now have another 101 bulbs coming. Must be my lucky number as it was not on purpose
Good going, marieortiz, now I have company. Patti
Glad to be in such good company. One of my bulbs was very extravagant!!
I'll bet you bought that Nectaroscordum ssp. meliophyllum that I so wanted, but resisted. I can't wait to see it! Patti
Is this sell for all their bulbs?
I am pretty sure it is verything they have left except Hippeastrums as far as I can tell. There is a list of what is left so you don't have to drool over those things that are already sold out. I got a email that all of my is is being shipped. Patti
HOLY COW!!!!! That is on expensive bulb!I got Tecophilaea cyan. 'Leichtlinii' . I say extravagant because I bought one at full price and it did not make it. So with my second one I am out a pretty penny if I do not succeed. What makes that one so expensive?
Marie:
I was prevented from sending my order through for the same reason: postage & handing almost same as order. If you order earlier (seems like it was before October something, the extra charge is not added. But when it gets colder, anything that would get frozen driving over the Rockies (bulbs, not books or tools) gets hit with an extra charge so they can fly it instead. My solution is that they have a sale earlier, for those living west of the Mississippi. I think I'll start lobbying...
Garden140,
You are so funny!
We all need to be in that 12 step program, but knowing how gardeners are, it would turn into a co-op!
When we lived in WI I had a zillion bulbs, and decided to start selling flowers at the farm market. This was only an excuse to buy more bulbs, of course! Gave me the opportunity to expand my collection of bulbs to lilies and alliums. Oddly enough I have never grown winter bulbs like tulips and daffodils.
Then we moved, and I had to be in charge of moving all my plants and bulbs, since it was MY hobby. I had to get a trailer hitch for my car, and rent a u-haul just for my plants! Even then I had to leave some of my lillies and alliums behind, and all of my clay pots.
I knew we had poor soil at our new home, but didn't realize it took a pickaxe to dig a hole, and even then you might hit a rock a few inches down! We made a few small beds, but I had to give up and plant everything in pots, which meant buying lots and lots of pots and lots and lots of potting soil! I want to cry every time I buy more pots and soil, that means less plants and bulbs that I can buy!
Every year I want to buy more of my favorite bulbs, they are always coming out with new colors. And it seems every year I see a new plant that I MUST HAVE, and I have absolutely no willpower! My husband gets "that look" on his face every time I get a box in the mail- he thinks the only worthwhile plants are vegetables or herbs!
I try to control myself, but I really can't. Like Marie said, it's really a sickness!
Oh, my, the thought of planting thousands of bulbs makes me faint and nauseous! I have planted probably close to 500 this fall, though, and thought I was doing great until I read this thread ^_^
I applaud you guys. Do post pics when the bulbs start blooming, especially you, bbrook!
A confession to my fellow bulb-a-hollics. I have one small pile of bulbs still to plant. Most likely tomorrow will be my final planting for 2008. I did a total of what we ordered, so the final number in the ground will be 6385, which is a tad less than 7001 we planted last year. I have easy soil, no rocks, and a very helpful DH, plus a real passion for spring bulbs.
Here is a what the spring garden looked like last year. I have about maxed out many of the beds, but not all. Plus many of the tulips are not perennial so they have to be replanted each year, but the majority of the bulbs planted are perennial and should be around and multiplying for years. I will always need more daffodils. Enjoy the slide show. The dogs are my dear helpers, Nell and Winnie. Patti

WOWSER!!! OUTSTANDING!!! I can't wait to see 2009 bbrookrd.
Wow, bbrook: Your garden looks like a public park. It must be huge! Wonderful photos. Thanks a lot for sharing. I still want to see some this spring.
Patty your gardens are amazing!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks all, it is not huge, just packed! We have one area that is fenced for keeping out the deer and rabbits and keeping the dogs in and the rest is an attempt to meld the natural landscape into a yard with some gardens. We have been at it since 1983 and still have at least a half an acre that we haven't touched, yet.
But, my mind has been working overtime thinking about the possiblilies of planting it recently. DH is not too enthusiastic. My endless stream project almost put him over the edge last winter, but he now loves it. Just think of how many more Narcissus I could grow. Trouble. TPatti
Patti, what a lovely house and yard you have! All that hard work has sure paid off. Lucky you to have a nice DH to help!
