Just a quick hello to everyone! I'm a recent transplant to Bryan and am looking forward to doing some xeriscape friendly work in my yard. I just moved into my house this week and hope to be able to get some preliminary things done in the yard over the next few weeks. Right now, I have an abundance of San Augustine...and some NASTY, BIG slugs! Ewwwww....
Anyway, I'm glad to 'meet' fellow gardening enthusiasts and can't wait to pick your brains!
Suz
Hi All!
Welcome, Suz. I see you are up late too! :o)
Hi Suz! Welcome! How fun to have a blank slate to start with! I try not to use any poisons in the garden, but I will admit that I use Ferramol Slug and Snail bait. It's organic though and won't kill your pets and wildlife like other slug and snail stuff. I got it at Lowe's but had to search for the organic section of the store. It wasn't with the other pest control products.
Hello Suz, welcome to the Texas forum, you will love it here.
Josephine.
Hi, Suz, and welcome. Where did you move from? Is that a drastically different environment for your gardening?
You'll find lots of helpful, friendly folks on here and the most amazing this is that someone can usually answer absolutely any gardening related question you can come up with, so just dive right on in.
Crow
Thanks for the warm welcomes! Elphaba, I'll have to pick up some of that bait when I'm at Lowe's. It seems like I'm in there about 3 times a day right now. :) Crow, although I grew up in Madisonville and lived there and in Centerville the majority of my life, it's just been in the past 3 or so years that I've really become passionate about plants and gardening. I moved here from Colorado and coming here from the high desert has been quite a change. I'm hoping that some of my favorites will do well here so I have my research ahead of me!
I can't wait to dive in, but I at least must get my office and work-related stuff organized first! Working sure cuts into my fun...but it does help pay for it!

Hello, I'm in Bryan too and my entire garden is xeriscaped. If you know how to gather seeds, you are more than welcome to anything I have!
Hi again to everyone! Oh, some more B/CS-ites! YIPPEE!! I hope everyone has had a great Thanksgiving. I'm still working on getting settled into the house but did get the car parked in the garage this evening so I'm making some progress!
I'm researching plants now. While I was in Georgia this past week and out walking with my niece, I noticed this absolutely divine fragrance. I finally found the flower responsible and have tentatively ID'd it as a Tea Olive. I'm very interested in seeing if this is something that will work around here. It supposedly blooms on and off year round and as I said before, it smells divine.
loveisagypsy, I am all about gathering seeds and would love to get ideas from you re: xeriscaping. Maybe sometime in the near future we could meet for some coffee (or in my case, tea) and talk about how you've gotten your garden set up.
To everyone who has extended the warm hand of friendship, THANK YOU! I'm so looking forward to getting to know everyone better!
Suz
Yes to the Sweet Olive in your zone. Osmanthus fragrans.. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1450/ The flowers are tiny, not showy at all but the fragrance is major.
Welcome to Texas Suz!! Glad to see you have been officially welcomed by a lot of our gardeners here.
As you plan your garden in TX this thread might be handy. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/897305/
Any seeds you are interested in just dmail a request to the person. You will find we are willing to share, by just sending them a SASE (self-addressed stamped envl).
Your garden will grow well in Bryan, and hope you will come to some of the plant swaps or RU (round-ups) we have in TX.
Sheila
Thank you for the link, Pod. That fragrance is truly something.
Hi Sheila! I do plan to be active in all aspects of DG because once I start talking plants, only other fanatics can stand to be around me! hehehe

Suz, if you'd like some brug cuttings let me know. I have several that are going into the garage, and 4 that are in the ground that should be cut back soon.

I have Sweet Olive at my house, and it likes to flower in "cooler" weather. The fragrance fills my yard. I was able to find some for a friend at my local Wal-mart this fall!
AuntAnne, I'd love some brug cuttings, but I am completely ignorant about them. How about a cutting or two and a lesson or two, also? :)
Suz
