Ok so I aquired some very mature over 5 tall multi branched brugs about a month ago from someone who wahted them gone from there yard ( weird I know). They are planted in my yard. and have new leaves and one is blooming today. Well I have never had a brug so large before so I have a question. Tonight and for the next 3 nights it is supposed to drop to 30 degrees here. Can I use a heat lamp or twinkle lights to keep them warm? I do not have pots big enough for these too and they are to big to bring indoors anyway. Besides they just got established in my yard, I do not want to casue them more stress. Their previous owner had them in her yard for years and never used any freeze protection.
I just don't want to lose them. I already have cuttings from these to that fell off during transport, they are being rooted currently.
New brug owner and getting freeze tonight
I think you could just cover them with some old sheets or frost cloth if you have it. It went to 34 here not too long ago and I covered all mine with some old flannel sheets and they were fine.
I will have to do that again here too tonight. We are in for some cooler weather...
I have a bunch of seedpods on mine and it didn't hurt them last time. I have a ton of stuff I am gonna have to bring in or cover this winter. So much for living in FL LOL!
The twinkle lights will help too. Also there is a woman here in Tx who bubble wraps her brugs . She starts and the bottom and wraps up to the Y and then a foot or so of each branch. She lives in zone 7. Worked great. There is another DGer down the road that buys bubble wrap at the dollar general and tapes the wrap sheets together to make a tent over them. It worked good for her last night. She got down to 31. The plastic doesn't hurt the plant because of the air in the bubbles. Another woman uses the foam wraps for pipes to cover her stems and branches. There are all kinds of ways to protect your brugs. I don't have any in the ground this year. I will be putting them in the ground come spring. But I know I will be making bubble wrap tents for sure.
I cover mine with paper lawn and leaf bags - works very well!
I told ya there were all kinds of ways to protect your brugs. :)
I used twinkle lights and sheets. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Thanks for all the ideas!
We must of had a light frost last night I saw some glistening off the nieghbors black roof this morning. Most stuff got covered but some didnt and still looks okay. Wed. is supposed to freeze for sure here.
