Here's one of my "Squirrel Proof" feeders in action.
NoNo Feeder
LOL...too cute!!!
LOL..!!
I was wondering if they actually work, now I know.
I've never seen the advertised as "squirrel proof"... maybe "squirrel indestructable" but not "squirrel proof."
And I've seen squirrels cling to mine and chow down but never actually, crawl into the crazy thing.
The reason I think it's called a no-no feeder: No-no one I know who has one likes it.
The Finches used mine for awile when I first got it but then just quit and I no-no longer use it!
Oh, I have one of them and all the birds seem to really like it. Well, the ones that like sunflower seed anyway. I just started filling my feeders in the past two weeks, and it seems to be very popular. They like that they can just slide around without getting pushed off completely I think.
Here's my list so far what I've seen feeding there
Tufted Titmouse - - - - - - - - - - (positive ID) - - - - - - - - [many!] [√]
Black Capped Chickadee - - (positive ID) - - - - - - - - [many!] [√]
American Goldfinch - - - - - - -(positive ID) - - - - - - - - [many!] [√]
White-breasted Nuthatch - - - (positive ID) - - - - - - - - [many!]
Northern Cardinal - - - - - - - - -(positive ID) - - - - - - - - [3 pairs so far] [√]
Downy Woodpecker - - - - - - (almost positive ID) - - - [one]
Blue Jay - - - - - - - - - - - - - - (positive ID) - - - - - - - [2 (so far)]
Sparrows (various)
Grackle (or maybe Starling?) - - - - - - - (1 only, got left behind after the flocks gathered and flew off)- - found a pile of feathers down by a stump though
[√] means they eat from the no-no feeder
I got a lot of birds on my no-no feeder, too. It was when I got an odd, grey, furry, four-legged bird I later ID'd a as a squirrel that I decided to call it a day with the no no feeder.
I put CHEAP feed in it, even have used it FOR squrrels (the Critter mix from walMArt with corn, seeds, peanuts, etc) but the expensive seed blends all go in real squirrel proof feeders or feeders that I've put bafflers over. The no no feeder is as wide as the baffler so even putting a baffler over it didn't thwart the rodents.
Ya know, I'm feelin' awful lonesome. Everybody talks about squirrel-proof
feeders. I'm ok with the squirrels; my BIG problem is pigeons. They eat anything
that doesn't eat them first! (except fruit. God help me if they start eating that).
And just spent $700 (of my Christmas Club money!) for a new rain gutter with
gutter guards 'cause they destroyed the old one by lining up on it & pulling it
away from the roof with their weight. These dudes are descendants of ones
that were coop-raised around here decades ago, so they're not goin' anywhere.
I just ordered the Dartmouth Caged Feeder from BestNest. Hopefully that
feeder will protect the seed for at least a few hours a day so the smaller guys
have a shot at it!
If you have a problem with them on your roof get those spikes to keep them off.
Carol... Wouldn't their weight close a squirrel proof feeder? You can adjust a lot of those feeders depending on the weight of the critter you're trying to keep away...
Judy -
I have the Squirrel Buster Plus; the pigeons just gather on the ground to
eat the spilled safflower seed. Problem is, I'd like a ground feeder for blue jays,
robins, juncos, etc. This Dartmouth one looks like a possibility; I may have to
jury-rig it a bit. Here's hopin'!
Jen, I actually think I didn't lock the top securely. The squirrel spends most of his time clinging to the outside helping himself to one seed at a time.
Judy, you're correct I shouldn't have used the word proof other than they aren't destroyed by squirrel chewing.
PortageGirl, my birds seem to like it as well. When the squirrel's away, it's just about covered with birds.
I just posted the picture thinking birdwatchers would think it cute.
Carol, I have some feeders that had springs to prevent the squirrels from feeding but the springs rusted and I haven't been able to find replacements. Have you ever had that problem. I hate to throw away bird feeders.
I'm going to try the NoNo feeder with just safflower seeds. It seems that the squirrels in our area are having a hard year as some oak stands produced poorly. The squirrels started bothering my feeders in the middle of the summer which is unusual and there's been a migration noticed which is an indication of stress in the population. I'm less inclined to discourage them because of this.
candy, in case you get some more cute squirrel pics you can share them here too!!
