Personally i find this is the best time of year to start my plants for the 2009 season. By starting my seeds now there is sufficient time to produce strong seedlings that will weather the hot summer months. This afternoon I'll sort thru my seed selection and decide which crosses I want to try. Then I'll sterilize my soil. Tonight I'll soak my seeds and tomorrow I'll actually sow them and put them in the mini greenhouse...then wait...and wait...and wait
When do you start your seed plantings?
Best time to start seeds is now!
I start mine now also........James
Oh Boys! It's time already? In your zone starting now seem to be appropriate. Here, in my garden earliest I can take my seedlings out would be mid-April. Last year, I sew my seeds around Feb. (for the 1st) just because that was when I harvested my very first seeds. It worked out well, I've had one seedling that flowered by mid summer.
This is the seedling's rebloom.
I start my seed in early spring. It's not that I think that is the best time. That is when my seed pods mature and I find that the sooner I get them started the better germination I have.
I am in a 6b zone. Does anyone know what is the best time to start the seeds here?
I started my seeds March 29 last year (due to lack of room). I am zone 5b & I think it was a little late since most of them didn't have enough time to finish blooming (about 25% had flowers or buds) but I've heard a lot of people say they don't expect flowers the first year. Lots of people start them on Jan 1 (easy to remember). Mine stay inside until May (after the last frost) & I wouldn't have enough room for plants that were growing as fast as they do. Most of my seedlings were around 5 feet with a few shorties & a few 8 & 9 footers at the end of this season.

From crosses I want to grow out, I sow my selected number of seeds soon as ready no matter the time of year.
If I don't get the germination number I want, I sow more so I have it.
For us, now is the best time. It gives us good time to get the seedlings up and on their way so I have a chance getting blooms the first year.
I have always started Seeds in December, but have already planted and am watching some babies right now. I thought I was zone5b, but I guess we have been changed to 7a , what ever that means..
I have a large Angel Trumpet growing in a pot that I have moved inside to my glassed in porch. It has blooms that are about to open-----but also has what appears to be a seed pod. Can someone give me directions on how to deal with this? Will the color change on the pod when the seeds are ready? And when it is ready, what do I do with the seeds? I think I read that someone said to soak the seeds. Please give me help as I have never tried to grow them from seeds. (I keep the temperature on the porch in the 50's and 60's.
