Did you know? I didn't.
The EPA has refused to recognize emissions from coal fired power plants as a major source of pollution. Earlier the Supreme Court ruled that it was and that the EPA should regulate it. The EPA refused and was sued by the Sierra Club. Yesterday the court ruled that the EPA should begin to regulate and all new plants in the permitting and construction process are frozen until standards can be set. The courts have said that the EPA will determine the best available control technology and enforce it.
Truly I'm shocked to learn of this because I assumed the EPA was looking after it. I've been hearing about acid rain for at least 30 years and it is a well known fact that these emissions contribute significantly to global warming. Environmentalist are calling this a victory over a stonewalling administration.
There is much better technology available but as with most other problems, the solution will hit us in our wallets. At the same time it will push progress for even better technology. I think it is better to bite the bullet and start cleaning up lest we all perish as a species.
