For everyone who took the time to share pollinating tips with me.....Thank you! Words can't express how I felt when I seen my first seed pod! A few seed pods dropped, but this little pod seems to be hanging around. Pod is on my German import Marbech, from Monika. White double brug is Sweet Lady in background.
Samba Dancer, looks as if tiny seed pods are starting to appear on her as well.
Pollinating Tips
Congrats on your Baby Brugs to Be!!! Very Nice color of Orange!! Aren't seed pods exciting!
Kylie
Ohhh Awesome! Did you do it at night? And did you play music and light those candles? LOL- way to go!!
Kylie, It was the best suprise I've ever had working with my plants!
Angel, I took your advice and done some night pollinating.Lol, No candels but I did use a light bulb.....and I was playing some Cajun music :)
I do have some bad news....my seed pods may get plucked by my Dept. of Ag. inspector. Toby told me this evening no cross-pollinating can be done until the plants come out of quarantine.
What? That really sucks after all your hard work! I'm P.O'd for ya! So what if the bees cross pollinated it? I suppose they would still pluck them grrr....
I don't understand Cannagirl. Why would the department of ag not allow that? If ya get time to explain woudl love to know the reasonign behind this.
Starlight only a guess.. But if one of the plants carring a seed pod had a Virus it would then be passed to the seed.. If the pod reaches maturity and the seeds are then distriubited the Virus would be disturiubed as well..
How very dissapointing for you! BUT on the bright side.. You know for a fact that you can do it and the your Brug is very accepting of Pollen . How much longer is your quarrintine?
Kylie
Any propagation of any kind is not allowed sadly... I still haven't heard from my inspector?? I thought for sure with all the cold weather she would be by. Maybe she has forgotten about me lol! One could only hope!
Take Care there Dollie! just one more year now!
Caren
I remember having that conversation , about whether pollen and seed could carry viruses at GW not too long ago...after looking through many articles it did show that other plants can harbor virus in the pollen and seed. Some were related to brugs so I imagine brugs could too. Awww well.
Is that a state or federal rule?
Angel, lol thanks for being P.O.'d for me :) That was too cute. It wouldn't matter if the bees pollinated the flowers or not. They are still going to be plucked....no seed pods on any import until released from quarantine. I knew this, but in my excitement on getting blooms pollinated I forgot.
Starlight, It's a mystery to me as well....just one of the golden rules with the Dept. of Ag. They know these brugs are healthy. They were inspected in Germany before leaving for the States. Again, at the Port of New Orleans as soon as the shipment arrived, and over & over again where I house them. Even Toby, my inspector said they are healthy....He already wants to buy Monikas collection as soon as he releases them :)
Kylie, you may have a point about the pollen/virus. Guess you can't be too careful. Yes, I can do it!!! Several of my non-imports have pods on them too.
Caren, Lol you lucky girl! No, inspector.....mine lives about two blocks from my GH :) Toby is really a sweetheart. I wonder what happen to your inspector? They have to keep updates on the brugmansias and make reports to send in. Maybe she came by when you weren't home.
Kathy, it's Federal.
So does an inspector come around and examine every plant import for natural pollination periodically. I always thought quarantine was just something that meant they keep the plant/animal until they feel it is safe to turn over to you.
I heard she had a baby this summer so maybe she doesn't have a replacement yet??
Will Toby leave a note if he comes by and you are not there? I would think they would.
Kathy, Toby just comes and looks over the brugs making sure they are healthy. He would have never known about the seedpod had I not old him!!! The foliage kept it out of sight....But, I would think they check in a glance for seedpods. From what I understand no pollinating can take place even using import pollen X's import pollen.
Caren, Toby doesn't leave a note at my GH....he tells me later when we do meet up that he came by for an inspection. Until recently, the imports were under just a shade cloth & open-air, so no place to really leave a note. Your imports are near your home, so I'm sure you would be left a note at your front door. I live about 20 miles from where mine are housed at. The Dept. of Ag. maybe understaffed....Toby was out with cancer for a few months, and your inspector had a baby...Don't they only have three in our area?
part of me wants to say not fair but I guess the only alternative would be to not allow you to import them. Good luck with the quarantine and in the end it just costs a little time I guess.
Canna Girl... Ok, now I get it, and yes that very true. Some viruses are caried into the seeds. Soem virus onyl go so far up a plant affectign only part of it and other viruses travel all the way up to the very tips and travel into and through the pollen and the seed pods.
Just seems since i passe dos many quareentens that it would be fine, but can fully understand. Just like with virsuses , actually unles s you gettign seed from a comemrcial place where the seed is processed and sealed, you shoudl giv ethem all a quickie bath to kill the mircoscopic fungi tht harbors on seeds too.
Now this is what you cnatalk to your Ag man about doing. Up here it about ten bucks.
If yoru near a college or have your ag man take the mature seed pods to one of the local college s that has a plant pathology lab.
I was just doign this yesterday. You can have tissue, and pollen from the plant have a DNA test done for any potential viruses . Takes about two hours too get all the pure DNA out of the tissue and sun it and then they sen dit down to the gentics lab and run it for all the potential viruses on Brugs. That what ya gott apay ten bucks for and then they wil send you by email the coded DNA print out and it can then be matche d in the genome data base to make sure that none of those virsues is showing.
The thing of it is, even as careful as you are, it possible you could have a clean pure stock, and some viruses come in from another area and affect that one.
If you can afford it, Would be worth having your brug teste dnow, if ag hasn't already done it and is just checking physically for anything to show up.
