New here.... plain green carnosa help plz:)

Montague, MI(Zone 5a)

I have what appears to be the plain green carnosa hoya but the leaves are extremely dark in color. A very dark green. All the pictures I happen to see is of the green carnosa but the normal green color, not dark like mine. Anyone have one like this? Any info on it? I am new and admit that I am addicted to hoyas and have a few and want and need more...........lol. Think that I have come to the right place...this forum. A big HELLO to everyone:)

Welcome to the forum Blondie! You're in good company here with your addiction. Most of us are enjoying the same addiction and helping others to start too.

Green carnosa can be dark or light, but it's still green carnosa. Different factors can affect the colour of the leaves such as light intensity and the type of fertilizer that's used.

I think I have one like that---its leaves are very dark, almost black-green, and they have a few white speckles that really stand out....the flowers are white with a red center...I know there was some question as to whether it was motoskei or carnosa, but either way it's a very handsome plant :)....and an early and easy bloomer...I love mine, but do thinks it's probably just a variant of carnosa...

Blondie0924: Can you post a photo of your plant in question? I have one that sounds like your description. It was identified as carnosa. I will go out and take a picture.

Lin, nice carnosa - where do you get those bamboo trellises like that ? I'd love to have
some of those for my hoyas...

Paula,
I got a pack of three at Lowes mine included the butterfly clips, and are supposed to be for orchids. They were about $4.00 or $5.00 for the pack.
Hope it helps
Lourdes =)

Nice trellises!!!! Should be EASY to make...you could Gorilla Glue the cross pieces to the verticles... How cool!!! Thanks for the idea!!!

Arrrgh! Grrrr! I keep losing my posts!

Yes, I get those little Trellises from Lowe's Home Improvement store. Home Depot doesn't carry them. They come 2 to a package along with about 8-10 of the little butterfly clips for $5.98. They are not real sturdy though. They are fine for little cuttings and real thin vines but don't work real well for large, heavy plants. They are sold inside the store with orchid supplies, actually labeled Orchid Trellis.

Home Depot sells bamboo in a couple of different lengths, maybe 3ft & 5 ft. (can't remember exact sizes for sure.) It is much thicker and as Carol mentioned, could be cut down and glued together to make trellises that would be sturdier! I think those come three to a bundle are curved at the top, to make a teepee type trellis for outdoor plants. That type, being thicker bamboo would make nicer trellises for hoyas.

I still haven't made it to Ace Hardware yet, but want to buy the coiled clothesline wire to make hoops ... they are great!

No pic yet but its just like a dark black green leaves. Mine has large vines but no flowers yet.

Does the foliage on your plant have any silver/gray speckles or flecks? Or is it a solid dark green? The blooms will tell for sure so when your plant blooms if you can post a photo I know someone will recognize it and be able to give you a correct ID.

Meanwhile, there are some great photo's of Hoya's, both foliage and flowers at this site: http://www.myhoyas.com/index%20ENG.htm

If you click on the alphabetical links on the left side of the page you can view her lovely hoyas and if you click on each photo it will enlarge so you can see an enlarged view.

Whats Gorilla Glue?

(Zone 1)

Supposed to be a very strong glue. I have some that has been sitting around for a year ... and I still haven't tried it! Don't remember what I even bought it for ... must have been something cracked or broke and either got thrown away or stuck in a drawer somewhere! ^_^

Gorilla Glue is like Super Glue....actually, they didn't give me stiches after surgery...they stuck everything together with 'Super Glue'. I use it for everything!!!! So far I haven't glued me to anything...but plants glue to things very well!!!!

However, I think that dunking the hoops in varnish (at least on the ends) before sticking in the pot is a good idea...had too many rot and fall after the plant was happily growing on it!!!! Mark's great idea....and it works...

Hey Carol ! Great idea about the varnish for the hoops - I'll have to do that.
Come back soon - I miss you more just knowing you're off the Island !

I've got to do some hunting for hoops. I need them bad !! I have many
cuttings and small hoyas that need something to grow on or they're just
gonna go wild; and then I don't know what I'll do with them ! I haven't yet
found any suitable wire to make hoops with ( as we're discussing on another thread )
and there are no trellises, like the one above, to be found around here either.
And I'd hate to have to send out for them and have them shipped.
I guess I'm on a hunt for some wire.... Any other genius ideas are sooo welcome..
