has anyone heard about this?

Tucson, AZ

I just found out that kids are now smoking and snorting the herb salvia and posting their experiences on the internet. That's crazy! there are 12 states that have now banned salvia and a movement to make salvia illegal...
whoda thunk?

The salvia you are talking about is Salvia divinorum, or Diviner's sage. NOT good old garden sage, which is Salvia officinalis. Diviner's sage is a shamanic herb from, I believe, South America.

LOL I knew there was something else to this...thank you betty for the clarification.

They must of ran out of toads to lick.Even if they banned salvia.Do you really think it would make it unavailable? You can get anything you want,if you got the cash.

I'm surprised that more (bad) kids aren't into gardening.....If they knew what most plants could do, you'd never have to do yard work again, they'd all volunteer!
Anything from Angel's Trumpet, to coleus, to the certain salvias....it's all out there....

I just like the flowers, sheesh...

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

merry mary, I've often wondered the same thing.
I try to avoid mentioning the effects of many plants for that reason.
Ilove my plants too much to have to give them up for someone who wants to abuse them.
Can you imagine not having sage in sausage or turkey and dressing?
What would our taste buds do with out herbs?LOL

Sarasota, FL

Salvia officinalis is not S. divinorum so there's no worries of your spice sage being banned. The divinorum works the 1st time, then headaches the rest of the time, why bother!
When we were kids we used to smoke cinnamon and parsley. Wonder we're still alive!

old school now--they've been doing it for about 10 years (I'm an AP in a High School).
