My Roo's Mystery Injury/White,Spit-like Poo/Nonstop Bleeding

Thompson, IA

Please Help! My Roo "Brian" was recently attacked by a Dog! However I dd learn that Chickens 'play dead' to Shoo off Predators (cool!). Anyway, so Brian was attacked and playing dead when my Husband found him and brought him into the garage....Bleeding Profusely from his back side, comb, waddle, and the back of his neck! Oh my! There is so much blood that I can barely tell where the Injuries originate from! I took some Neosporin and was rather generous with it, and then clumped large amounts of vasaline to the areas to help stop the bleeding and keep him from pecking at the areas or being attacked again.
We kept him in the garage overnight, and the bleeding WONT STOP! He seems to be eating and drinking alright. Plus, his back side now looks worse, AND I found a strange lump on his Right side Spur (shown in the posted image)!
So... (1) Bleeding profusely from tips of comb, waddles, back side, and back of neck where feathers were ripped out.
(2) Tumor like looking bloody lump on Right side Spur
(3) Poo is bright white, very runny, looks almost like a glob of spit (not to be gross...but Ive never seen anything like it!)
Does anyone know any other way to get the bleeding to stop?! We dont have any $$$ really and only have what is on hand here on the farm! And cannot afford a Vet visit unless it is life or death.
Please Help!

use all purpose flour for cooking or cornstartch powder u cook with for bleeding will stop within 2 min usually, pile that on and will coterise it!!!!

the spur looks like the quick was ripped out and is irritated. keep that clean wash out with warm soapy water with antibacteria soap or sterile saline and use neosporein on that one. should heel fine but the spur will either never grow back or it will but alot smaller and very slowly. i posting several posts so u get the info faster.

Sounds like he was hurt pretty bad. Must have hit a vein, or artery.
Good luck, I know how much this hurts you!

I don't have first hand experience with chicken injuries, but my first thoughts are:

Are there any lacerations large enough that you feel you could stitch them up a bit? It sounds like if he won't stop bleeding it needs to be stitched up and/or put some sort of clotting agent on it, like a man uses for shaving...

Also, does he have free range of the garage? If so, I'd be inclined to get him in a crate of some sort. Force him to stop moving around as much and just focus on healing.

I have no idea about the poop, but maybe it has to do with trauma. At least its not bloody.

The thing by the spur looks like it needs to be lanced to help it out, but again, I'm not certain.

Welcome to the forum, at least I've never see yah before, and I sure hope one of these very knowledgeable ladies (or gentlemen) comes along soon for some additional advice.

It looks like a hematoma--or blood blister. I am sure the weird poo is related to the stress of the attack and trauma, unless there is blood in it. He might be bleeding internally--have you tried anything like alum or (help me here--haven't people used something else like flour?) to stop the bleeding?

I knew you used something else. Thanks silkiechick!

blood feathers can't do anything for except stop bleeding and the flour will do that. comb and waddles use flour to stop bleeding after and hour or so rince that off then keep vascileen(sp) on those. if any puncture wounds do same thing i said for spur for them. chickens actually heal very fast as long as not severly deep should close up in a few days and be fine. make sure everything stays clean as possible and i would seperate till healed. poop sounds normal to me they have those now and then no idea why.

Thank you all so very much!!! I do have Flour and Cornstarch Powder and Vasaline, so I can use all of those. I don't believe any of the wounds are too terribly deep, the dog (which is actually our dog that attacked him!) was wearing a muzzle at the time of the attack, so he wasn't able to get a good bite of him. About the poop....Trauma would make sense, since no, there is no blood in it, and it did only start looking like that since right after the attack last night and then a few times today. I will treat his Spur the best I can, and let you all know how it turns out!
And Thankya Doe....yes I am and was quite hurt! Brian is one of my favorites and I adore him very much, as do my kids! My poor daughter knows something happened and knows he is bleeding and hurt, but she doesnt understand why...poor baby.
Lazy.....Yes I am new here, thank you! :)
Again....thanks all for the advice! I posted a new pic of Brian taken about 5 minutes ago.... And I will be sure to keep everyone updated on how he recovers!

The poor thing.. I hope you can stop the bleeding.
Remember to take a breath and be calm... If your freaked out, it is not helping him! Trust that your doing the right thing..

easier said than done.. I know!

Absolutely most effective thing to stop bleeding is super glue. It will probably burn, though. Flour never works for me; cornstarch usually does and DE works well.

Broken blood feathers will continue to bleed unless you pull them out.

The diarrhea is likely stress related, but stress can activate coccidia, so if it continues more than a day put him on sulmet.

He may have broken his spur, causing the blood in the area. I would leave it alone unless it is still bleeding. If it is, you need to get the bleeding to stop.

Keep him inside and warm until he is well on the way to recovery. Make sure to keep flies from his wounds.

Roosters are pretty tough old birds! You hang in there with him, and the love will pull him through! Give him a "light" hug for me!
I used to raise chickens, and they loved me like I was their Mama, so I know how you're feeling right now!

Do give us an update Mrs_Pach.. I for one am still worried about your roo.

Mrs_Pach,
How's Brian? We're thinking of you!

I hope your roo is okay... Please come back and tell us!

I use a steptic pencil on the bloody parts( used for shaving knicks) Then clean and wash off the bird, keep him warm and separate from the others until he heals. they will pick at him and any raw or bloddy spot. I use Blue Kote Wound dressing. It helps heal everything! Feed him some treats. when I have a sick/injured bird I spoil them with oatmeal and cottage cheese!
