I had quite a few hatchlings in the past week. I thought some folks might like to see pictures. It was a mixed bunch - some from my own birds and some super silkies from Silkiechick! Plus today, my first ever cuckoo maran. My marans and welsummers are actually due tomorrow. I think I'll do a separate thread for them. So here are this past week's babies.
First, the cuckoo maran baby next to the serama baby from our own serama girls who hatched earlier this week. I find the size difference so funny. The maran baby looks like it could be the mom of the serama baby!
Last week's hatchlings
those babies are precious
OH MY GOODNESS!!! I covet that little baby gold laced!!! When we were at the fair, I told DH, that's all I need... haha
I want it...I want it...I want it...I need it...I need it... I NEEEEEEED it!
*******stomping feet**********
[OK, that's it. I'm putting myself in time out.]
Thanks Makj! I can never figure out which ones are my favourites! All chicks are cute!
that is true, I had a batch a couple of months ago and they are a mix of bantam and rhode island, strange combo but they sure were cute babies, feathers on the feet etc....
Poor widdle baby cochin. If your mommy doesn't decide that you're her favorite. You climb right in a box and tell her you wanna go to Vancouver, WA!
Those sound cute! Did they all come out shades of red like the rhode island?
Lazy Ladies - everybody is my favourite on a different day. It's the only fair way to do it! But I am especially pleased with the cochin because it's our first ever baby from that pair of birds. I can't wait to see the feathering. I hope it's another hen!
Me too. I'll be crossing my fingers and toes for you. Either way, I bet s/he'll be gorgeous!
love love the pics!!! especially the buff baby!!!! holy fluff and nice foot feathering!!! i have not hatched from them since adding the hattrick silkies same with the whites would love to see a few pics as they grow. i got 12+ of their eggs just put in the hatcher due12th just for the buffs. let me know if they r clear buffs, how the whites look and how they grow for ya!! i'm excited to see how the new bloodline improves on my stock. looks like top pic is white and right is buff and second pic a splash and a blue if i'm seeing them right.

Cute babies......I so wish I could have some!!!! Oh well I will just have to be a godmother you your babies
Maybe one of you can help....I live on a lake in Northern Wisconsin...so DNR says..."no livestock". I think I can have two "pet" chickens if I keep them either in a "tractor pen" or on tethers with halters. The breed I would like is Gold Laced Wyandottes because of their Wisconsin heritage....and their hardiness for cold temps. I will keep them inside during these winters though...I have a greengrowing area (see photo) where I grow veggies all winter and it would be a perfect place for them to roost.
Now...the problem is that the places I've found that breed these chickens require a purchase minimum of 15! I've been trying to find neighbors to share the order, but with minimal luck. Do any of you know of a place where I could order a smaller quantity? I think I could find homes for 4 others...thanks for any help...lynnann
I face the same issue, lynnann. Try Craig's list, and let your local humane society know you're in the market. You never know what they'll rescue.
I also plan (once I have my chicken tractor) to contact the local high school. Big agriculture department; I'd be seriously surprised if they couldn't hook me up. It could be a feed store will order a few extra for you when they place a big order.
Yup. Try www.mypetchicken.com. They will send orders as small as 3 one-day-old chicks, but sometimes they recommend 5 for certain areas if you are away from larger cities (i.e. longer time in transit). They also will vaccinate and do the sexing so you get pullets if that is what you want. Other option, go to local poultry shows and buy birds direct from breeders. Or you may be able to advertise on Craig's List that you want them and see if there are any sellers in your general area.
And by the way, if you're familiar with the solviva farm (my dream farm), she keeps chickens inside her greenhouse and their body heat helps to keep the temperature up in there.

What cute chicks!!! They are beautiful!
I need some soon. I am melting everytime I come on here!
I quit....Okay that didnt work. No special gum for this group!
Silkie, do you sell hatching eggs regularly? If yes, when. If no, :(
Your babies are beautiful.
CMoxon, I love them all.
as long as u have livestock and it does not drain into their water supply (lake) DNR has no control over it. chickens r poultry not livestock. u need to do research on codes for ur area, only local ordinances and state laws should be able to regulate that like dept of ag and usda ones like that would have a say .
yes sew i do hatching eggs most of the year and thank u. i don't have heated coops so none eggs till spring unless we get a few good nice weather days but it has been rain or snow here for weeks so i haven't gotten any for awhile. they should start to pick up again come feb -march somewhere in there.
I will be waiting!!!!
(giddy with anticipation!)
