Yesterday I noticed Lucy (my frizzle) had her eye closed and it was runny. I put her in a cage an gave her cottage cheese with garlic and grapes. I also put ACV in her water. I washed her eye with a solution o PetRX and water, then put neosporin on it.
Am I doing the right thing for her? Should I do something else?
Am I Doing The Right Thing?
Sounds like you are doing things right in general. My only question is what is PetRX and is it safe for eyes, and the same for the neosporin. I think there is an ophthalmic (eye) version of neosporin that should be used for eyes, but not the other stuff. I could have it wrong but that is my impression. Anyone else?
Pet RX is safe for eyes. It has many uses for chickens. It can be used for colds, scaley mites eye worms, ect.
Oh good. :-) I have VetRX for their colds but I didn't know if it was the same thing.
thats what i meant vetrx, not petrx, so sorry
Kathy, I hope everything goes well with your Lucy.
Thanks tia, i'm hoping for the best
Just went to wash Lucys eye. it had a big glob of yellow puss in it. i wiped it out and put more neosporin on it.
Kathy...It sounds like maybe she got something in her eye that caused an infection...try to see if there is anything in there, or if maybe it came out with the goop...Be sure you are using Ophthalmic Neosporin... Otherwise your regimen sounds fine...
Thanks Dusty. Just cheked on her again, and she still has her eye closed
I have used neosporin and bactricin in my chickens and rabbit's eyes for infection and it did really well.
Sometimes baby rabbit's have very sensitive eye's when they first open them and they can become infected very easily if mom decides to pee in the nest. So if i find one with a sticky eye i apply this once a day in a small amount and it keeps away the infection.
I've allso used visine in a chickens as and eye wash for irritation. I have experimented with alot of things on chickens and found most things that work on us work well on them too.
Good Idea here Bactin is great for use on painful wounds it takes the sting out and sterilizes the wound too.
Sounds like *whatever* may be still in there Kathy...
Do you think it will come out by itself?
Hello Dusty How are you doing??
hi harmony, should i keep washing her eye?
If you have already rinsed it i wouldn't you know if she did get something in it her eye could just be irritated.
Kind of like us when you scratch your eye rubbing it.
Like most things it's probably just a wait and see how it go's and treat or don't treat according to what happens.
Yes... Wash it out and try to pin her down and look to see if you can see what may be still in it...
Hi Harmony...I'm okay.. a bit frustrated right now.... I'll post elsewhere, I don't want to hijack Kathys thread..
(Sorry Dusty) Jordan i hope we were able to help and your hens eye gets better and let us know how she's doing.
Did you get the others all taken care of with their sqaubaling chickens can act so rediculous sometimes.
My hens who are with eachother and most of the time sisters one will get a feather out of place and blame the other and off they go fighting.
thank you ladies, and dusty i don't mind if you hijack the thread. always glad to ear from you.
harmony, i separated the other ones, so no more fighting
Good a peaceful flock is a happy flock (peaceful for you too :)
update:
lucy looks better. hopefully tomorrow there will be no more goo in her eye
Thats Great Jordan Could you tell me what worked the best for her eye i like to know for future reference.
Hope i didn't get Dusty irritated if i did i'm sorry.
harmony, i washed her eye with VETRX and water. then put neosporin on it. the only symptom she has is the eye. no sneezing or not eating. she doen't act sick. i'll let you know in the morning how her eye looks
I just went to buy some VetRX and this is what I read..
"Eye Worm"
This affliction is most harmful to game birds, which must have good, clear vision at all times. The tiny worm works its way under the third eyelid and causes a pus pocket to form. The bird will blink excessively and rub its eye at base of wing feather.
To treat, hold bird under your arm so you have both hands free. Open bird's mouth while turning its head to side and tilting down so you can see the cleft in the roof of the mouth. Dip a small cotton swab into warm VETRX™. Press swab right into cleft. Do this slowly. Watch for VetRx to come from each side of bird's beak and pus coming from corner of each eye. Remove pus and rest bird for awhile. You may have to repeat treatment two or three times before you see results.
EEEWWW i don't have game birds and kind of glad i don't.
Harmony .. you didn't upset me.. I am just not willing or able to vent at this moment...It has to do with our imminent move to MI....
It was referring to Poultry.. but game birds are more at risk since they need their sight to be precise.
Okay Dusty just wonderin ^_^
ZZ you mean chickens get eye worms where on earth do they come from!?
are they deadly? and contagious?
I never heard of this and i've had chickens 7 years!
I don't know... but I'd think that what that hard pus ball was when you were saying it was common in poultry.. maby that is the cause?
edited to add...
I'm not giving advice like I'm an expert.. I was only passing on information I found when purchasing VetRX.
I googled poultry eye worms and yes, it is real.. I guess we never stop learning!

Jordankittyjo,
This problem reminds me of an often discuss dilemma in the health industry for people.
When someone gets a sore back or a stiff joint. Take acetomenaphyn extra strength and drink some water. This can be a fine remedy and usually works. However, the long term effects of taking a pain reliever like this can (often) leads to overuse and can when combined with untimely consumption of alcohol ... result in loss of kidney-liver function. Humans need both to live. So the down side to taking some medication can increase quality of life while in the long term it kills you. Neosporin is a terrific product for cuts and such for people and poultry.
I seldom help my poultry get better other than mites and worms. I currently have a big beautiful Game Fowl rooster in a hutch now ... he got plucked by my neighbors 3 Chihuahua's (they killed our 45lb bronze turkey hen). The GF roo has so few feathers ... he needs a heat lamp to stay warm. He took the initial charge from the 3 cute little dogs and all his hens escaped up into the trees as well as our guineas. I need to make a gate that shuts easily as is we have a fence to pull over the pathway under the arbor leading into our yard from the driveway.
One more thing to do. Kelly
