Hi,
I am from New England and just subscribed this past week. I find there is so much going on here, I don't know where to start. I haven't posted on any of the forums, just voted in the Photo Contest, which was a lot of fun. I went to the Northeast Forum and I was surprised there were only 5 threads that had new posts yesterday. Unless I was reading it wrong. Can anyone point me in a direction?
Thanks
Newly arrived and a bit overwhelmed...
Welcome Lisabeth, from another newbie....... Yeah, there is a lot here! My personal history with online communities, however, has taught me that the best thing to do is jump in with both feet, while staying alert to the local etiquette and folkways. In other words, pick a place and post.
Then, don't worry if no one responds right away, just keep posting and eventually you make friends and find your way around. ;-)
The New England forum I have not even looked at yet, and I wonder if, because of the season, things slow down in some forums just like they do in the gardens?
What kind of gardening do you do or are you interested in? Go to those forums and poke around til you feel inspired to share or to ask a question. People here are friendly and once you get started it will begin to flow. I picked a whole long list of forums to have as favorites and if nothing is happening in the few threads I have posted in and put on my "watch" list, I stroll through those and read here and there......... learning all the while.
Enjoy!
Kylaluaz....I suppose it is almost 9am there? Not quite 6am here. Thanks for those tips. I seem to have done the same thing you are doing, I created a long list of forums I was interested in and am following those for the time being. I think I put too many on my favorite forums and that may be why I am feeling so overwhelmed. [g] I haven't marked any threads to watch yet, so I think that is what I need to do next.
Happy posting! :-) Thanks again!
hahaha no it's around 3 am here actually -- I sometimes get up at night and play around with the computer for a while. Fortunately not EVERY night...... but if I can't get back to sleep at all I seek entertainment instead. ;-)
Ah....well you can see I have no friends in California. [g] I am up in the middle of the night more often then I like and get on the computer until I get sleepy too. I was just trying to remember what I did before computers? I think I read more. :-) Is there really a town called Weed in CA? I am surprised by your z7b, I would have thought z9? Northern California?
Weed is north of Mt Shasta and fairly close to the Oregon border. A ways east from the coast so we don't get that foggy cloud forest climate, more akin to high desert. It is around 3000 elevation where I live, and has been quite dry, though we did just have a humongous rainstorm (4 or 5 inches in a couple days, yow!). On Oct 15 there was the first hard freeze, just as zone 7 would have it, it got down to 20 and killed all the veggies in neighbors garden, then slowly warmed back up, but it does get crispy cold here they tell me........
Lisabeth, I actually think that before computers I did not wake up in the night so very often, LOL! I know I wrote more as my handwriting has deteriorated with lack of practice (fingers trained to keyboard instead.)
Hi lisabeth, come join the NE forum, it has been a little slow lately, but when we can't get into the garden any more, we'll be back in full force. This past week with the beautiful indian summer, I'm sure everyone was outside, at least til dark!
Looking forward to chatting with you there!
Kylaluaz...you are so right, I can type a lot better than I can write now. The few times I write a note on paper I take a look at my handwriting and it's awful! lol I use the computer for every-thing. For every note and list. I open a file for anything I want to remember. I used to write in a journal. Gee, maybe I should start some sort of hand-writing project just to keep in practice. Use it or lose it, as they say. :-)
I am not familiar with that part of the country personally, but it sounds wonderful! 3,500ft is at the top of Mt Greylock, the highest mountain in Massachusetts, here, which I never heard of until I had to look up the elevation in Massachusetts. I am at an elevation of about 300ft. [g] You are pretty high!
So do you post in the California forum the most?
Deb...thanks for the NE welcome. I have been reading the 'latest postings' on the home page and I was just reading one from a returning member who is a nurse, who referred to a trip to Tower Hill with Deb along with Orchid Photos....would you happen to be that Deb? :-)
See? There you go, another NE gardener found you. ;-)
Lisabeth, I have mostly been hanging out in the Organic Gardening forum where a few of us have been comparing notes about No Dig garden beds. I also have spent some time in the Recipes forum as I got enthralled by a thread entitled "What Cook With Squirrel?" and I could not help thinking of that old cartoon, well, now can't recall its name, but maybe that means I am finally getting sleepy.
What cook with Squirrel? Why, Moose, of course......
have fun.....
Well...good night then...I will probably see you sometime in Organic Gardening, since I have been doing that for about 25 years. [g] Recipes, is my DD's area of interest, but sounds like a wild thread on squirrels, who knew...
good night..
weclome to daves garden from upstate new york. this is a great place and remember when you post unless someone is sitting at their computer when you do then you usually don't get an answer right away.
have fund and don't worry about making mistakes and things like that. we are an oh so friendly group here. LOL
Lisabeth, no I'm a different Deb, but I also posted on that thread, and am also a nurse.
Wow, two nurses named Deb on the same forum, what are the odds, lol. Thanks Deb for the welcome and I will be posting over at the NE forum this week. See you there... :-)
Herbie, thanks for the Welcome and I am sure I will run into you in one of the forums or another. :-)
lisabeth
Let me welcome you too, Lis. Please visit the NE Forum (aka the nurses named Deb Forum). We are normally much more active and I'm sure things will pick up.
Welcome, Lisabeth, just jump in anywhere. Sometimes I can't keep up with all that's going on, but just keep pluggin away. I usually am in NE forum, too. But, I'm not a nurse nor named Deb, but feel at home anyway. My list of favorites is long as well, and getting longer all the time. Do you have an chickens? They are quite the lively bunch there. Even if you don't, like me, it is still interesting. I got bleary-eyed looking at the photo contest. What fun! Make sure you check the photo thread in the NE forum and the artists' thread. I am amazed at the wealth of talent among DG members!! Have a good day.
Jan
Hey Lis!

What all do you grow?
Kylie
Hi Im new also as of this week. I live in the south western part of tn. I have spent 2 days now doing nothing but hopping around dg and learning so much. Wow what a great bunch of folks here, and so much knowledge to gain. Guess the dust bunnies will have to wait a bit longer as i am having too much fun reading and learning here in dg. Happy Plants to all.
Thanks very much for all the kind welcomes! I have yet to get over to the NE forum. I've gotten mesmerized by the photo contest every time I log on....lol.
Thanks to all the 'non Debs' from the NE forum. [g]
Victor....I've seen some of your fall foliage on the NE forum photos posts and they are amazing and I am quite jealous! lol
Jan...no I don't have any chickens, but I do enjoy looking at photos of them. I imagine I will start in the forums with the photo threads, which I am very happy to see there are a lot of.
Kylie....wondering what zone Texas is? You must be gardening most of the year? I have lived in Massachusetts my entire life and love the change of seasons and actually enjoy the snow. So, it works for me! I have an interest in so many plants but I just don't have as much time to give to many plants that might interest me, so I focus on finding and trying low maintenance plants. Perennials and shrubs. I also like to try to attract butterflies and birds and my current efforts are adding plants that attract hummers. I have been gardening organically in our present home for the better part of 30 years in one way or another. We don't have as much sun as I would like, but we still manage to tend a small vegetable garden every year. I imagine there in Texas, you grow Hibiscus? I have just started adding Hibiscus but the hardy varieties. There are some amazing tropicals that are not hardy enough here.
Welcome to you too lildinks! I have always thought Tennessee would be a great place to live. I would have thought you were warmer than zone 7 there. I can think of a lot of plants that I would struggle to grow that you can! :-)
Thanks again, everyone!
:-)
lisabeth
