Forcing narcissus actaea

Millbury, MA(Zone 5a)

Could anyone please tell me whether these can be forced in water like Paperwhites or need to be kept refrigerated for 3 months or so in order to bloom?

I wish I had an answer for you. These would be pretty to force indoors.

The info I've managed to glean suggests that they won't work in water and would have to be chilled for at least a couple of months. My next question is --- if I pot them, could the pots be kept outside or in a completely unheated shed without danger of freezing the bulbs? My cellar isn't cold enough to keep them there.

I put a thermometer near my bulbs in the garage. Then when the weather fluctuates outside, I take a look at what the temp is in my garage. Also, if you put the pots in boxes with packing peanuts that would keep them warmer.

Thanks! I never even thought about putting some sort of packing around the pots. I might actually get away with putting them right next to the foundation at the far end of the cellar --- but then again, it's often very wet down there and that wouldn't do them much good either.
